RIP John Spalding

Posted by Megan Seling on Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 9:30 AM

Local musician John Spalding passed away in his home yesterday after a long battle with lung cancer. Spalding played in 90 Lb. Wuss, Raft of Dead Monkeys, Suffering and the Hideous Thieves, and more recently he had started a project called LoveLand, in which he collaborated with many of his musician friends including Andrea Zollo of Pretty Girls Make Graves, many members of Minus the Bear, Ben Verrelen of Helms Alee, Matt Bayles, Joel Coupling, and others. There are plans to officially release his album, The Beautiful Truth, in the future, and for now you can hear some of his music via MySpace.

Friends of Spalding's have set up a fund at Bank of America. Just stop by any BoA to contribute, tell them you'd like to give to the John D. Spalding Medical Fund. All proceeds will go to his wife Jody.

john was an amazing musician and an even more amazing individual. he was one of the most positive, thoughtful, outgoing, and sincere people i've ever met. it saddens me to hear of his passing, but comforting to know that his long and painful battle is over.

An exceptional human being and fine musician, John would always greet you with a hug and smile, in his battle with cancer his dignity was striking. Thanks for being rad John! XO DW

John touched a lot of lives, and his battle with cancer was hard-fought. Please consider donating what you can, to help Jody get through this astronomically difficult time.

A lot of folks loved that dude. If you need a reminder of what that love looks like, you can go here: http://cherrycanoe.wordpress.com/2008/08…

Cancer is always such a fucker - John fought a bold and graceful fight. Amazing how he was in such a painful struggle and could easily have been self-obsessed and yet would always focus on what was happening with others. You are an absolutely incredible person and I will always hold you in my heart John.

Kate's comment is spot on. Most all of us would be self obsessed in the midst of that battle. I am amazed that even up to the end, John was still lovingly pouring himself out to others. Like his song says, he longed for grace, it was given to him and he turned right back around and gave it to others. He is truly missed.

John took music into another dimension on the Short Hand Operation album, only proof of what he was capable of. One of my greatest regrets in life is not being able to meet John, and sharing my thoughts with him. You will be truly missed!
