What They're Saying in Bon Jovi's Preconcert Prayer Circle

Very funny piece up on McSweeneys.net called "I Wonder What They're Saying in Bon Jovi's Preconcert Prayer Circle":

Dear God, thank you for this opportunity to be together tonight and to bring people together with our music. Thank you for surrounding us with each other. You really gave us an awesome guitarist, God. We appreciate you taking the time to do that back in 1983, when you had so much stuff on your desk...

After reading that I did a little Googling (check out the autographed leather women's vest!) and learned this:

BON JOVI IS #1 TOURING ACT IN THE WORLD ON BILLBOARD CHART (New York, NY—Dec. 11, 2008)—Twenty five years into their chart-topping career, BON JOVI is 2008’s top touring act in the world, coming in at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Tour chart, which is based on data reported to Billboard Boxscore from Nov. 14, 2007 through Nov. 11, 2008....

The band that has famously “seen a million faces and rocked them all,” in fact played to twice as many on this tour—over two million fans attended the 100 sold out dates on the Lost Highway World Tour, promoted by AEG Live. Bon Jovi has set the bar for more than two decades as one of the most successful rock bands in the world. Globally, they have sold more than 120 million albums and performed more than 2,600 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans.

Nice work, God.

The Devil sponsors all the good bands.

I had no idea they were on tour. Also, no idea that so many people are so out of touch with reality as to think that it is okay to relive the 80's in such a manner.

Yes. Out of touch.

Not mainlining reality, like the guy above, unaware of the planet's most popular musical showman.

Keep it real out there, folks. Abandon the music you have loved for decades. New horizons await you. I hear Snow Patrol really slays in the arenas. Everybody sings the guitar solos, it brings the roof down.

Rock.

While the numbers certainly back the "million faces" claim, I'm certain that the "rocked them all" stats are still quite unconfirmed.

Depressing that so many people would rather see a band decades past their heyday than anything new and exciting.. it makes me think about helles belles t-shirts.. depressing

"Livin on a Prayer" was recently VH-1's top video of the 80s, counting down from a hundred. VH-1, along with buddies MTV, Rupert Murdoch, Summer Redstone, whoever else, doesn't matter, can count on McSweeney's as a new partner.
