Billy Corgan Knows How You Listen to Music

Posted by Megan Seling on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:16 AM

billycorganspin.jpgWhich is why he says the Smashing Pumpkins will no longer put effort into releasing albums. Says Mr. Corgan (via Kerrang):

People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles, and skip over the rest. The listening patterns have changed. So why are we killing ourselves to do albums? Our primary function now is to be a singles band. We'll still be creative, but in a different form.

I suppose there's some truth in that. But maybe people would listen to the whole album if you made a whole album worth listening to? For instance, I still listen to all of Siamese Dream. As for Zeitgeist? Not even the singles.

He's got a point. CDs are just data-delivery mediums now, only relevant for the time between purchase and when the music is loaded into a computer playlist.

The Smashing Pumpkins haven't put any effort into releasing albums since the late 1990's. This isn't news.

He has a point, in one way. I don't listen to full albums the same way I used to. I end up with a few favorite songs on a playlist, or a playlist with lots from my favorites. And there should be nothing wrong with being a singles band. Now is the time to embrace the beauty in one fantastic song, rather than the concept that a full album is the only true way to listen to a band's music.

He just doesn't have to sound so jerky about it. And it's true- if one does a whole album full of great songs, one will listen to a whole album. A band can't expect us to put up with filler any more just to further the album concept.

Considering that the vast majority of the last 3 Pumpkins albums is nothing but shitty filler, this is a good move for them.

Billy does have a point about the changing nature of popular music.

He's a drama queen though.

I LOVE Gish, S. Dream & many tracks on Mellon Collie...

Too bad Billy found god ... ditched James & D'arby,; has ties to Courtney; and insults his fans who come to his shows.

It's boring watching this trainwreck unfold.

i try not to let my impression of a musician effect my opinion of their music, but billy corgan is one of the biggest, most condescending assholes ever. EVER!

i stopped listening to SP cold turkey after seeing them live in 1994, after he insulted the audience for half the show for having the audacity to be from the same state as ted nugent (this was in michigan), and then cleared the ampitheater with ear-shredding feedback. just thinking about it, even now, makes me livid.

anyway, this sounds like a lame way for a jerk to weasel out of acknowledging that nobody likes him anymore.

Just make a 7-9 song 30 minute album every year or two with a couple killer singles and people will listen to it all. Tool is pretty much the only mainstream band that can make terribly long albums and can still sell out arenas.

what a bunch of no talent psychos this new sp round up is
its a franchise of these cows died in pain hamburgers
literally all they all are no joke
they want money and they enjoy insulting people while taking their money
everything they do since adore is a pile up of train wrecks
anyone gullible enough to blow their money up their ass actually does deserve to get disappointed because they are beyond obviously pathetic and obnoxious materialistic unintelligible self centered pseudo humans
darcy and iha are really really smart for staying as far away from these parasites as possible
