What Will Be Your Anthem for 2009?

Posted by Megan Seling on Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:07 AM

I only ask because I sure as hell can’t figure out what mine will be.

I’m uncharacteristically stoked for the new year—I have a lot of plans, I have a long list of awesome and silly and important things I want to do over the next 363 or so days, and I need a song to pull it all together. I need an anthem. I need something big and bright and empowering and not saccharine but really catchy and fun.

I polled friends on their anthems. “Anything by Beyonce,” one said. “Hollaback Girl” said another. “Anything by Robert Palmer.”

Not helping, friends.

So what’s your anthem? Is it awesome? If so, can I borrow it? Just for a year? Because I need an anthem. I feel like that’s the one thing missing in Operation: Best Year Ever. If you help me find it, I’ll buy you a Slurpee (because drinking more Slurpees is on my list).

Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner is my anthem.
You should borrow it, it won't let you down, I promise.

"My Product" by Mad Rad. It keeps me going on a lot of early mornings!

Until such time as I find a 2009 contender (Lily Allen's "The Fear" is fun but lacks chutzpah), I'm using "The Only Way Is Up" by Otis Clay as a placeholder. Never lets me down.

I decided yesterday that mine is "Things are What You Make of Them" by Bishop Allen. It will absolutely meet that catchy and happy, but not sacchrine ideal. I too decided 2009 and will the Best Year Ever, and this is going to help me get there. (song's at the link)

Whoa, I was going to say "Proud Mary" too...weird.

But, in lieu of that, I'm with commenter #5. What was 2008's anthem?

My answer to this question is always "Telstar" by the Tornadoes.

"Move On Up" by Curtis Mayfield. With that song, 2009 is going to be that much awesomer.

@5, @6: I didn't really have much of an anthem in 2008--not an official one anway. And maybe that's what was missing. That was the small but essential ingredient keeping it from being the best year ever.

That said, I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but Kanye's "Stronger" played the part nicely a few times. I just makes me walk with a little more of a swagger. But it won't do for 2009. It doesn't have enough... pep.

That, and I hate it when he said "Me likey."

kraak & smaak "plastic people" has been my anthem since, ummm... tuesday. not sure if it suits your needs (might be a little short on pep and swagger-induction), or if it would hold up for an entire year, but it's a pretty catchy number.

"We Hate The Kids" by the Indelicates is my current anthem. But you said big and bright and empowering, not acerbic and cynical and hate-fueled. So I can't really help.

I say "Ridin' the Train Bitches Part II" by Sebino. Instrumentals are like theme music.

"Northern California" by Police Teeth is the official summer jam of 2009!
