Beef at Mass Line?

Posted by on Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 10:42 AM

Blue Scholars released this video, "Snow and Coffee," last week.

Common Market released this video, "Tobacco and Snow Covered Roads," yesterday.

Both have the same beat, but RA Scion states in his version that Geo of Blue Scholars took the beat, produced by Sabzi, from him—it was supposed be used on Common Market's next EP. Is this real beef we are hearing? Is RA Scion really upset? Is there a split happening at Mass Line? Sabzi is the producer for both Common Market and Blue Scholars.

What ever the case maybe, let's take a vote:
Which rapper makes better use of Sabzi's beautiful beat?

neither rap is as weak and generic as the terrible beat/production. both artists should ditch the producer and try to make the music behind their rhymes interesting rather than something you're likely to hear playing at Starbucks.

Geo's version is far superior, but RA Scion is pretty funny.

All I wanted was to go to the park and run fro... and to
'Cause that's what residents do when you represent the 98272
Why you think they call it Snohomish?
'Cause the weather's so cold-ish...

Jeezus Charles, this is no beef, it's a joke. It's the same freakin' video. And listen to RA--his whole faux-earnest spiel is a goof on Geo.

Srsly, don't make this into something it's not.

@1--You're right, that beat is soft.

I don't know ... sounds like a beef to me. If it's a joke, I don't get it.

And Sabzi's got skills.

Geo's version is totally better, but RA's version and video are fucking hilarious. Sabzi's usually amazing but this is not his most compelling beat.

@4 Listen to RA's lyrics. He's totally goofing around. There's no beef.

I'm with @2 that Ra Scion's lyrics are better.

"Not to worry, I got something for flurries
A jacket from Gap and the hood's hella furry."

Ha!

Water almost came out of the nose with that one...

Another "vote" for a total goof from RA.

Still, you could always put the speculation to rest by contacting Mass Line, Geo, RA, and even Sabzi and asking about it. Couldn't hurt. You'd might get more material for another story.

Or just make something up. Who would know?

The "beef" is tongue-in-cheek as, I suspect, is this lineout post. Get a grip everybody.

@7- or he could "put a call into..." as the stranger journalists love to do.

holy shit, i realize that sarcasm on the internet is hard to decipher sometimes, but am i wrong in assuming that half of charles' writing is satire on some level? it may be a bit droll, but such is the manner in which "intellectuals" operate.
figure it out folks.

RA kills it by the way, but only because he got to punch back. Geo is CORNY, but RA's verses wouldn't have half the heft if it weren't for such an easy target.

Ra Scion with the punch-lines, no contest.

@8, @10--There's nothing in Charles' rhetorical style to suggest he's being sarcastic here. If he is, now is a bad time to crack jokes about Seattle hip-hop beef.

In which case Charles is either serious and irrelevant or kidding and tasteless.

Both are equally likely.

This is obviously a real beef. If you know these guys history, you know they are equally trying to get Sabzi's best beats and love. They are like two little calves battling for the same nipple.

I just hope Fatal Ghetto Soprano Prez doesn't get involved.

No beef but I've got to give the nod to Scion. That "fro... and to" line had me laughing.

I liked that Barack Obama commented that "both were horrible," although I totally disagree.
