Cold Comfort For Microsoft Songsmith...Smiths

Posted by on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Some of you might have been fired today, but your gift to the world—Microsoft Songsmith, a PC program that "automatically" builds songs out of your bedroom singing attempts—lives on. Begs the question—what would've happened if more classic pop songwriters bailed on their bands and let Songsmith do the work for 'em? The Internet, bless its heart, has an answer:

Everybody dance!

A great match for the video:

Chillingly convincing:

These guys have been pumping out tons of Songsmith bastards, and I've dug up a few other personal faves through YouTube searches: Johnny Cash's much more upbeat version of "Hurt," the dance remix of "Enter Sandman," and some American Idol dude getting accompaniment for his scream-fest.

One of the first and funniest has to be Runnin' with the Devil:

Some of these, like Enter Sandman, are better than the originals.

Thanks for the link, Sam. We're making them as fast as we can, and always taking requests (obviously our access to original studio multitracks is limited, but we're always looking for more).

I want somebody to try using Songsmith with early Yoko Ono recordings or some by Diamonda Galas.
