It’s doubtful that any rapper has begun his/her album the way Detroit hiphop artist Finale has on his excellent debut disc A Pipe Dream and a Promise (out April 7 on Interdependent Media). “Arrival and Departure” is built around a sample of the analog-synth orgy in Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein.” (His producer, who could be J Dilla, Black Milk, Ta’Raach, Waajeed, Dimlite, Flying Lotus, Khrysis, Nottz, or Oddisee—can’t find the info online, samples the part that begins around 5:10 of the video below.) Holy shit—what a way to kick-start your debut full-length.
“Detroit’s the hardest city on the planet,” Finale says on “Arrival and Departure,” and his music and lyrics reflect that reality. A Pipe Dream is one of the best hiphop albums I’ve heard in the last couple of years—years, let’s admit, that haven’t been rife with classics, but still.
