Ice Cream and Indie Rock

I'm attempting to pull a coherent review of last night's Mt St Helen's Vietnam Band/Say Hi show out of my early afternoon hangover (thanks, Frank), but for now, let me just say that the recent confluence of local ice cream and indie rock has my full support. There's Full Tilt, of course, the White Center ice cream parlour that hosts regular all-ages shows (Smile Brigade is playing there tonight), and then there's Molly Moon's, which doesn't host rock shows at their ice creamery but last night brought their ice cream to the rock show, distributing cups of their MSHVB-branded flavor, a "coconut ice cream wtih chocolate chunks and huckleberry sauce." I suppose ice cream vendors have to hustle a little extra hard to move their goods this time of year, which is fine by me if it means free ice cream. (Confidential to Lindy West: sorry I ate all the chocolate chunks before handing the ice cream off to you; that was thoughtless of me.) In any case, breaking news, folks: ice cream is delicious, Molly's Moons' especially so. Also, can I just say how much more excited I am by the recent wave of hip/indie ice creameries (see also: Penny Licks in Williamsburg) than I was about artisinal doughnuts or cup cakes? It goes like this: ice cream > cup cakes > doughnuts (full disclosure: I once had job working graveyard shifts frying said artisanal doughnuts, so I may be too harsh a judge on that trend.)

Regarding the music, I'm afraid Say Hi might fall into the category Christopher mentioned of bands that are at their best on record rather than live (and I do really dig their new record)—of course, given how many permutations Say Hi's live band has been through, who knows how they'll sound next time you see them. Finally, they seem like a nice bunch, but I just don't understand the fuss about MSHVB (also, I maintain that viral videos need to get off my lawn)—sure, their drummer is prodigiously talented, and the band clearly know how to play, but I just feel like those songs never really get anywhere. And I fully intend to further explore and explain why I feel that way just as soon as this Canadian headache powder gets to work (thanks, Trent).

1. ice cream > doughnuts > cup cakes

2. say hi's main issue was that sometimes good album tracklists don't make great live show set lists

3. mshvb are incredibly fun, but they could work on their endings. some of their songs are like return of the king.

4. can we make rachel flotard mayor of capitol hill?

oh, and re: #1. the mshvb ice cream was tasty, but really really chewy. compare and contrast with its namesake.

Mount St Helens Vietnam Band is the flavor of the week.

What a perfect metaphor!

1: that ice cream was delicious!!
2: i second rach flo as mayor of cap hill (and THE UNIVERSE!).
3: on the same subject, if i were ever to scalp someone and wear the winnings as a wig, it would be rachel. best hair ever.
4: i agree re: say hi. good (even great) album, snoozey (but not bad) live show. the newish members help give it a more exciting edge, but it almost conflicts with what im expecting to hear.

First off let me say that all three bands were good. The ice cream and the free hugs from Rachel and Cristina were highlights.

But over all of that i was thoroughly disappointing in Neumo's. Friday night was the first time I had been there in about 3 years or so and I was unaware of all the changes. The layout that they have planed up for All Ages Bar w/ ID shows is a joke. I'm sure many of you reading this know the situation there so I won't go into detail but Neumo's old setup with the All Ages floor and 21+ Balcony was much better suited, especially for a show like that one where there was a large all ages crowd. They had to pack a lot more kids into that DMZ'd off North Korea of an all ages section than it was comfortable for. It's not like you didn't think a lot of kids were going to come out to that show.

There was still enough room to dance in the all-ages area, and the 21+up section actually got fairly crowded itself. The old way with just the balcony for booze sucked. Props to Neumo's for figuring out a better system.
