New Devo Album On the Way

Posted by Eric Grandy on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 1:40 PM

Huh, despite the reunion touring and the upcoming SXSW appearance, I did not see this one coming:

The fall of 2009 will bring a new DEVO studio album, their first one since 1990’s Smooth Noodle Maps. It’ll mark their first new music since the strong fan reaction that greeted the 2007 single “Watch Us Work It,” their first new song in 18 years and one that was produced by Sweden’s TeddyBears (Robyn). They’re now in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album (title TBA).

What the fuck was Smooth Noodle Maps? Also, the Teddybears? This should be interesting...

Update: Sorry, commenters, I just hadn't heard about the upcoming record until the above press release caught my eye today—which doesn't seem like the biggest deal considering Devo haven't released an essential album since 1981 and Line Out isn't trying to be their pre-release Twitter feed.

They've been talking about how they are almost done for, what, almost a year now? How does this catch you off guard? You're the music editor, isn't that your job or whatever? What article was this from anyway? Also, I don't think I've ever actually met someone who has listened to Smooth Noodle Maps. Interesting.

The QVC parody video for "post post modern man" is a treat.

I'm with Eric here, allowing for some tracks off Oh No! It's Devo, Shout, and Total Devo. the whole irony-dada-sell-out thing exhausted all permutations once they became their own stereotype instead of being one step ahead of it.

That said, their recent (expensive) live shows were great! Like the Paramount show in 2006
