Maybe you're frustrated about a crumbling (or crumbled) relationship. Maybe you're tired of being broke and/or unemployed. After all, who isn't these days? Or perhaps you're pissed at stupid scientists who invent shit like the atomic bomb and only afterwards do they realize the magnitude of what they've helped create. Again, who isn't?
Well Challenger's Give People What They Want in Lethal Doses has got a song for any and all of that. Since being released in 2004, it's remained one of the best records I can listen to whenever I want to punch walls. Or heads. The angsty opening track "Input the Output" perfectly captures the restless emotions in a tired relationship. "Brand Loyalty" breaks up with you over and over again, insincerely repeating the line "You're great, but it's never gonna work out between us." And "Unemployment," as singer Al Burian says, is "a song strategically calculated to have mass appeal among people with nothing to do all day but sit around and listen to records." In the opening lines, he spits: "I’ve got holes in my pockets and / It gives me a headache / I clench my fists, try to will them both away / Can I get a cigarette? I need a new habit / My old ones just don’t seem to cut it anymore."
Even if you're not mad about the very same issues, song after song, Give People What They Want... scratches the angry itch that's tormenting your brain. And yeah, there's even a song for those of you upset with the mad scientists ("The Angry Engineer"). It may be a five-year old record, but it's aged well—because people will always be pissed about something.
Challenger - "Input the Output"*
*Something to consider while listening to this song: On the band's old website Burian says "In the end chorus, we're all encouraged to yell and break things." Do with that what you will.
