My SXSW Top Ten

Posted by Kelly O on Wed, Mar 25, 2009 at 3:00 PM

I know, I know... it's Wednesday. I just finally got back from Texas. The simplest and most concise way I can explain my tardiness is by saying: A. Never fly into San Antonio instead of Austin and/or trust anyone who claims a 7-day car rental is gonna cost 200 bucks... B. Avoid staying 25 minutes from downtown in an assisted-living facility for the elderly that doesn't have wi-fi, and C. Try NOT to leave your laptop locked up in the trunk of a person's car who has the potential to mysteriously disappear for several days.

That said, here are my ten favorite moments of SXSW, which may or may not include a big stinky bag of weed grown by Willie Nelson.

10. Seeing Arish, aka King Khan, give Gerry Roslie of The Sonics a great big happy hug.

9. Watching a "surprise" Metallica set down in Stubbs from the roof of a parking garage with a bunch of crazy drunk Japanese dudes.

8. Watching weirdo electronic band Kap Bambino with a bunch of crazy drunk French girls.

7. Nobunny, Nobunny, Nobunny!!!

6. Piling into a big white van with 15 or 20 people after a crowded and hot Black Lips show to drive to a black biker bar over in East Austin to watch both The Spits and No Age play more crowded, even hotter shows.

5. Watching The Circle Jerks play Black Flag songs while eating a street taco that had a jalapeño in it that was so g*damn hot it made my neck break out in hives...

4. Taking a break from all the punk rock at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon where real Texas cowboys gambled on chicken shit bingo, and Dale Watson played some of the best country I've heard, since, well, since last year when Ginny's had the same exact event. WATCH THE VIDEO.

3. Watching the strangely delicious band Personal and the Pizzas with an ice cold bottle of this (okay, several bottles):

2. Nursing hangover from Number 3. in sunny San Antonio, first, on a park bench outside The Alamo, then in the most amazing taxidermy room in the world at The Buckhorn Museum (the bloody marys there are god-awful, but they still do the trick).

and lastly my favorite favorite-est SXSW moment:

1. The Gza + Black Lips + Willie Nelson Weed Set at Emo's.

If someone told me that I would one day see the Black Lips do a Wu-Tang mashup, live, with Gza that was dedicated to Ol' Dirty Bastard - if someone told me that, well, I wouldn't believe them...

... and if someone told me I would see the Black Lips and Gza play together right after* they got high on weed that was delivered to the Black Lips as a present from Willie Nelson, well, I really wouldn't believe them. I guess ol' Willie is rumored to send primo mary jane to bands that he likes. All I can say about that is God Bless SXSW.

*there's speculation whether or not the Willie-Weed was smoked before OR after the show, but a close source tells me "it was super strong", and tasted like "kinda like apple pie".

This was the best review of SXSW by far. Thanks!

God, I miss Austin. The rest of Texas ... not so much. Not sure if I'll ever leave Seattle to move back, though. Although friends, family -- and food! glorious Austin food! -- make it hard not to.

I can't believe you would dehumanize a chicken like that! You are setting the Chicken Movement back 35 years with your sick and exploitive support of it publicly shitting on bingo squares for profit. You are a bad person.

We should have eaten some Popeye's fried chicken after this. Washes down good with all that Lone Star.

Right on for taxidermy and Gza too!

Ok, so said "willie weed" is freakin' fantastic. Got backstage passes to one of his shows in Austin a few years back. Went in, smoked some of this infamous stuff, had to be driven home before he even hit the stage I was so knocked on my ass. Biggest regret #1...getting too high on willie weed to see him perform. Boohoo. :(
