Also Tonight...

The band name Made Out Of Babies conjures all those tasteless dead baby jokes my friends used to swap back in junior high. It makes me think of a mound of flesh, interrupted innocence, and unsolicited brutality. Not a wholly inappropriate projection for the Brooklyn quartet that have adopted the grotesque phrase as their moniker. MOOB make the kind of racket that avoids the outright shock value of more absurdly gruesome bands (think Cannibal Corpse or Anal Cunt), but instead opt for even more disturbing squalls of implied violence, calculated tension, and unsettling juxtapositions. Singer Julie Christmas embodies all of these characteristics. Her delivery ranges from feminine crooning to demonic wailing. Maternal one moment, murderous the next. The band does their part by laying down large slabs of meaty noise rock. At their meanest, they conjure the malefic throb of Unsane, but they offset their wrath with passages of finely tailored beauty, making the abyss that much more appalling in comparison. Folks that prefer their therapeutic misanthropy in the form of bands like Big Black, Jesus Lizard, and Swans should take note.

Made Out Of Babies play at the Comet tonight w/ Black Elk, The Family Curse, and Madraso.
