Record Store Day: The Damage

Posted by on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 10:05 AM

Did you do significant damage to your funds on Record Store Day on Saturday? I sure did. I hit up Wall of Sound (which may have had its best day of biz ever) and Everyday Music (bustling like mad during the early evening hours). Here’s a partial list of my haul (some of which went toward replacing items "lost" in a move last year):

Herbie Hancock- Flood
Haruomi Hosono- Medicine Compilation From the Quiet Lodge
Caetano Veloso- s/t album from 1969
Bowery Electric- Beat
Gene Clark- No Other
Nightmares on Wax- A Word of Science
Various Artists- G-Spots library music comp on Trunk
No-Neck Blues Band- Intonomancy
De La Soul- Buhloone Mind State
Buzzcocks- Singles Going Steady w/ bonus tracks

What amazing things did you score?

(By the way, Record Store Day should happen at least on a quarterly basis. Also: Book stores may want to borrow this concept for their own businesses.)

I didn't do nearly as much damage as I thought I would only because I knew going into it I only had about $50 to spend (stupid rent/cell phone/bad budgeting on my part). I got the Moondoggies limited EP, Jim Gaffigan's new DVD King Baby, and the new Mirah record.

Sonic Boom in Ballard was, sadly, out of a couple of the RSD releases by the time I arrived. Including the Flaming Lips 7"! Oh well. But it was still so much fun--the place was packed! (I had wait in line for nearly 30 minutes to pay--which I didn't mind doing at all.)

Only purchased one item. But I do agree that Record Store Day should be quarterly (and I hope it becomes so).

I was at Silver Platters (Queen Ann) and Easystreet. And this time not one drummer decided to throw their stool in my direction like in 2007.

I had a short list of items to purchase, so I spent less than I budgeted. I picked up some Madlib albums I unfortunately slept on, some funk compilations, and Barrington Levy's 'Robin Hood' (Levy being unfuckwitable during this period - I want to get everything from his prime). I wanted to, but did not pick up the new Doves album (sold out!) and Axelrod's 'Seriously Deep' repress - both I'll get soon, no doubt.

My favorite pickup was the Pet Shop Boys' DVD collection, on a good sale, but I also got the new Junior Boys and New Order reissues. (I'm buying them slowly, as I save up.)

Got some good exclusives from Record Store Day:

Metric 7" picture disc
Talking Heads '77 vinyl re-release
Queen's first EP, numbered limited edition

Aside from that, I also got the multi-vinyl set release of Pearl Jam's Ten, the Merge Records anniversary compilation, The Arcade Fire's linen-bound accordion packaged Mirror Noir DVD, and the J Dilla Dillanthology compilation.

got to Sonic Boom five minutes after it opened and they'd already sold all the Jesus Lizard 7" box sets. goddammit. still wound up spending $90. coincidentally, i was trying to track down some Bowery Electric on vinyl as well, but to no avail.

I was also bummed to find that all the Jesus Lizard box sets were gone so early in the morning, but the live Pavement LP I picked up is just as good I had hoped.

"record store day" should be weekly if you can afford it.

but that's cool, follow the herd, just another cow.

i picked up a few nice soul 45s at the Electric Tea Garden, it's a new shop opening up above the American Prosthetic limb company on 14th & Madison. Dude's got some good stuff and the prices are pretty good, nothing super rare(as far as i can tell) but i'm sure there are some hidden gems.

The Slayer "Psychopathy Red" 7" is pretty freaking sweet. The packaging alone made it worth the 6 bones.

I was at Easy Street (QA) by 10:00 AM and missed out on a couple of the exclusives I wanted (Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard, Sonic Youth/Beck), but I got most everything I was looking for plus a couple other things since they were 20% off:

Depeche Mode - Wrong 7" (1081/xxxx red marble)
Bob Dylan - Dreamin' of You 7"
the Jesus Lizard - Inch 9x7" (0829/2000)
Obits - I Can't Lose 7" (clear red)
Slayer - Psychopathy Red 7" (clear red)
Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope 2xLP
Bruce Springsteen - What Love Can Do 7"
Wavves - Wavvves LP
Weedeater - God Luck and Good Speed LP (x/500, 180g gold)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! LP

@9 - Record Store day is twice a week for me, easy. It's just exciting have a day to run out and get exclusive stuff like that. Reminds me of back in the day when there were actual release days for things.... sigh.
