At 5:15 this morning, I awoke to KEXP playing Bow Wow Wow’s “C30, C60, C90, Go!” It had been several years since I'd heard this furiously joyous blast of Burundi-drumming-enhanced pop from 1980 and, goddamn, did it sound invigorating, even at that insane hour. When the stridently chiming guitar slashes in at about 38 seconds, it’s like [insert favorite drug/drink] kicking in. You feel as if your face is going to crack from smiling too hard. Also, songs on major labels about illegal home taping are inherently funny (those pioneering, cassette-brandishing pirates somehow didn't kill the music industry). Stealing rhythms from Burundian drummers, maybe not so much…
