Also Playing With My Bloody Valentine Tonight...

Posted by Dave Segal on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 3:13 PM

Kurt Heasley, prime mover of Lilys, has been added to the bill. In 1992, Lilys released the album In the Presence of Nothing, which stands as one of the best (and most reverent) My Bloody Valentine homages to date (those sorts of records were coming thick and heavy shortly after Loveless surfaced).

MBV play WaMu Theater tonight, with Brightblack Morning Light opening.

The Lonely Forest Will Probably Be Famous

Posted by Megan Seling on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 1:23 PM

Friday night's Lonely Forest's CD release show at the Vera Project was sold out before the Lonely Forest took the stage. I was shocked. I knew they had a big fanbase in their hometown of Anacortes, but I had no idea that the band was that beloved in the all-ages scene. Hundreds of kids were all giddy and bouncy and restless, anticipating the moment the Lonely Forest took the stage. The girls were wearing fancy tops and heels, the boys were less polished and drooling over the girls. And for the 20 minutes or so before the Lonely Forest's set, they all crammed in tight to the stage, vying for prime spots.

And then they screamed. The instant the Lonely Forest stepped in front of the crowd, the room was filled with shrieks and applause. Throughout the set, every kid in that crowd listened to everything frontman John Van Deusen had to say. When he burped into the mic (twice) they laughed. When he did an impromptu acoustic version of "Tomorrow," they sang along. When he introduced one song as being a song he wrote after having a night of suicidal thoughts, they all let out an sympathetic "awe" and then cheered when he said the world was beautiful.

They even loved him when he messed up. At the end of the first song, he clumsily knocked over his piano by rocking out too hard. Then his tuner wouldn't work. "I'm being lame tonight, I'm sorry," he said, when he couldn't tune his guitar fast enough. They cheered anyway. They love him so much because he's just like them. He's a little awkward and nervous, but he's gone through what they're going through, and they appreciate that he candidly talks about that on stage and in songs. And while Van Deusen may be the most magnetic personality of the Lonely Forest, the whole band is incredibly talented—their songs are blasts of power pop and rock laced with piano and epic choruses that are fun to sing along to. The lyrics are thoughtful, but they're not too precious to stomach.

Here's video of their closing song, "We Sing In Time," via mattithyahu on YouTube:

See what I mean about the adoring teenagers?

The Lonely Forest are going to be famous.

(Side note to Wild Orchid Children: It sucks that there were no vocals for the first 20 minutes of your short 30 minute set, but I think you handled it really well by not throwing a fit and moving forward with the psychedelic jam sessions/freak-outs, and then rocking the fuck out as soon as the mic got fixed. So props to you, dudes. It wasn't ideal, but your set still sounded great.)

Creed Shreds, Reunites

Posted by Dave Segal on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 12:18 PM

The "[insert band/guitarist name here] Shreds" YouTube meme (yes, I know it's old) is meant to mock popular musicians, but this one—brought to my attention by my ex-colleague Jason Pettigrew this morning—actually improves on the execrable Creed's usual sound. Pettigrew's observation that this send-up of Creed sounds like now-wave rabble-rousers U.S. Maple is spot-on—and hilarious.

(By the way, you may have heard that Creed are reuniting. Because the state of the world just isn't shitty enough right now...)

About That New Gossip Song, "Heavy Cross"

Posted by Eric Grandy on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 11:45 AM

It's found its way to youtube (for now):

And it's kind of just ok. The twitchy, flanged, palm-muted guitar picking reminds me of that Touch of Class remix of "Listen Up." The spacey moments marked by echoing, glassy synth pings seem needlessly lulling, until that last blast of guitar comes in at the end to sweep everything up. Beth Ditto's voice sounds great as ever, but the song is hardly the kind of anthem you'd expect from their first single in so many years ("it takes two" is sure no "standing in the way of control" as far as sing-along choruses go). Still, hell of a live act...

Tonight in Music: My Bloody Valentine, Chris Cornell

Posted by Megan Seling on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 9:00 AM

My Bloody Valentine are coming to Seattle for the first time in, like, 17 years. Dave Segal wrote about the band, their history, and their return in this week's music section:

From 1987 to 1991, MBV had one of the greatest creative runs in rock history. It rivaled those of the Beatles' 1965 to 1969, the Velvet Underground's 1967 to 1970, Can's 1969 to 1974, and Hüsker Dü's 1984 to 1987. Shields's hot streak was such that even relatively overlooked EP cuts such as "Swallow," "Honey Power," and "Glider" radiated unparalleled brilliance.

MBV's 1987 output—the EPs Sunny Sundae Smile and Strawberry Wine and the mini-album Ecstasy—finds them melding Ramones' speedy energy, Love's luxurious guitar jangle, and the Jesus and Mary Chain's feedback symphonies. The sound followed the UK music scene's post-Psychocandy/C86 obsession with amphetamined tempos, buoyant melodies, and sugary vocal harmonies. MBV's releases during this time are among the finest of their kind, proving them to be competent formalists, but only faintly hint at the seismic changes in their aesthetic to come.

Chris Cornell - "Long Gone"

Chris Cornell
(Showbox Sodo) I like Soundgarden as much as the next person raised on Led Zeppelin, but never cared enough to develop expectations of their individual members. Not so with the Soundgarden faithful, many of whom have greeted Chris Cornell's aiming-for-the-mainstream solo career with disdain, which was upgraded to outright mockery upon the release of this year's Timbaland-produced Scream. Over radio-ready beats that could've been made for Nelly Furtado, Cornell belts out lyrics about love and bitches, and it's perfectly harmless and completely unnecessary. Once upon a time, Cornell wanted to be Robert Plant; now he seems to be aiming for Power Station—era Robert Palmer. Pertinent fact: Tonight's show has been sold out for weeks, so all us haters can suck it. DAVID SCHMADER
