About That New Gossip Song, "Heavy Cross"

Posted by on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 11:45 AM

It's found its way to youtube (for now):

And it's kind of just ok. The twitchy, flanged, palm-muted guitar picking reminds me of that Touch of Class remix of "Listen Up." The spacey moments marked by echoing, glassy synth pings seem needlessly lulling, until that last blast of guitar comes in at the end to sweep everything up. Beth Ditto's voice sounds great as ever, but the song is hardly the kind of anthem you'd expect from their first single in so many years ("it takes two" is sure no "standing in the way of control" as far as sing-along choruses go). Still, hell of a live act...

The Gossip perform at the Capitol Hill Block Party, July 24/25th

The Gossip pretty much peaked in 2002-2005 and have been going downhill ever since. I wish they would stop flirting with celebrity and trying to be a pop band and recapture the heart and soul that made their earlier rock songs good. But who knows, plenty of bands make the jump from the underground music to soulless pop sensations with much success, even if they lose their earlier fans during the process. I'm sure they are still fun live, but I can't see rushing to buy their next album the day it drops.
