The Shins' New Line-Up?

Posted by on Tue, May 5, 2009 at 11:25 AM

Stereogum reports on the Shins' new line-up as of last night's show at the Showbox:

No Marty Crandall? Also no Jesse Sandovol on drums, although the keyboardist's absence is more likely to be the focus of internet conjecture. Rounding out the lineup were Eric Johnson on keys (Fruit Bats), Ron Lewis on bass (Fruit Bats, Ghost Stories, Grand Archives, etc.), and an unrecognized drummer.

Stereogum's brief review is that the band missed Crandall's energy; conjecture in the comments is that Crandall may have been kicked out due to his alleged fisticuffs with his ex-girlfriend; consensus seems to be that the Shins don't really have any extra energy to spare when it comes to their live shows.

Wow - "an unrecorgnized drummer". Tough. Great to hear that Ron is playing with them - super good guy, super good musician.

The "unrecognized drummer" is Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Black Heart Procession). And having been fortunate enough to catch the very rainy show this past Saturday in Bellingham, you might want to actually see them play before posting comments regarding their lack of energy, as I'm pretty sure that those rain-soaked kids up north would tell you differently.

I wondered about that, too. Without Marty there were 100% fewer undergarments thrown onstage last night.

Good! Those 2 are kinda jerks. Ran into them at a bar in San Francisco a few years back...Marty and Jesse were asshats.
