Before introducing Sinead O'Connor at the 1989 Grammy's (she performs one of the strangest pop tunes of the 80s, "Mandinka"), Billy Crystal cracks a joke that has no comic-value (or direct comic-value) outside of its exact place in history:
We laugh at the joke about faxing Grammy awards not because it is funny in itself, but because we find it funny that people once found a joke about the technology (which is now dying) funny.
