Spencer Moody is My Favorite Human Being Right Now

Murder City Devils just finished the set to beat for the weekend. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the band was fucking tight and rocking out and all that, but the best part by far was what Spencer Moody did in between songs. (The following will be an incomplete account, if anyone has video, audio, or a full transcript, I'd love to see it.)

After playing "I Want a Lot Now (So Come On)," Moody roared, "A lot now, we play these shows in front of a lot of people, and I see a lot of gross, disgusting high school jocks in the audience. But what we do is for all the beautiful faggots, and the rest of you can all eat a big bowl of wet dicks."

He then encouraged the audience to get in their cars that their daddies paid for and go drive home to their daddies' houses. "You think this many people get together and they're all good people," he continued. "They're all shitheads."

Then they played "Dancing Shoes." They played "Idle Hands" and "Dear Hearts," Moody shoving the mic in his mouth and growling, garbled, not giving a fuck, literally falling all over himself.

"I may be stepping out of bounds," he said after another song. "But all the heterosexuals in the audience, all the straights, can just turn around and face the other way. If you don't turn around, I'll accept that you're homos, just like all of us up on the stage."

Then they played "Get Off the Floor": "if you're not gonna dance, get your ass off the floor." (Some guys in sports jerseys with their frat name embroidered on them got their asses off the floor.) They played "It's in My Heart."

"Right now, we play and you all sing and cheer, but after this show, you'll go back to your high schools and pick on the faggots and the kids in the chess club. Fuck you, all of you guys. Who do you think we were? When I went to shows, it was just faggots."

437f/1243381990-murder-2-kelly-o.jpgThey played "Rum to Whiskey" and "I Drink the Wine." Moody wandered off stage after another song and came back with Past Lives' Jordan Blilie cradled in his arms like a baby, holding him for a moment before letting him head back offstage.

The band started playing "Broken Glass," and Moody kicked the mic down, walked over to the organ and palmed the keys, fucking things up, living up to the song. When he did get on the mic, he just bellowed out a strangled, wordless moan: "Ohhhhhhhhh." Then, he delivered a monologue:

"I'm glad you took the time out of your day that you usually would've spent flat-ironing your hair...But before this band, there was a band called Iggy & the Stooges (cheers), and you can cheer all you want, but you don't know a fucking thing." He went on to talk about getting his first copy of Metallic K.O., giving kind of a punk rock origin story for the Murder City Devils. That was the end of the set, and it was fucking brilliant.

You just don't see enough bands turning their whole act into one giant middle finger these days (there were lots and lots of "fuck you"s directed towards the crowd). It was just fucking great.

Easy enough for a band member to do, when your band is way past it's sell by date. Good for him!

Text received from Gabe Kerbrat, longtime Devils Roadie, Tour Manager, and consigliere:

I know you didn't want to hear, but you might be missing not only the most brilliant Spencer Moody performance, but the most brilliant front man performance ever.

It was sent at 5:57 pm, with Dave Navarro standing over Gabe's shoulder. I sort of regret not going, now.

and yet moody (and all who may think/feel like him) have absolutely no problem taking money from all the frat boys going to their concerts. didn't MCD break up a long time ago?

Spencer Moody is a douche. You neglected to mention what he did to me last night while he had that mic in his mouth:

http://thecolorawesome.com/2009/05/25/sp…

Grabbing the back of my head and grinding my face and camera into his crotch makes him my least favorite human being right now. Mess with the crowd all you want, but leave the photographers alone.

I was there and it wasn't all that great. There were a ton of strait people there that support gay rights and were equally picked on. Perhaps the writers bias has shown through too much. Look single out the assholes that were dicks, but being hostile to the whole crowd for just a minor few seems counter productive.

I didn't go so I was unaware of the "jock" problem. Was it that bad? However I guess if you book Kings of Leon, NIN and JA, they're bound to come.

Also, I love the Devils. But they maybe should decide weather they are broken up or not. Them playing could be construed as "getting together for the money" at this point. Though I'm a bit pissed I missed this set. After the second Seattle show a few months back, you could tell Spencer was more then a bit upset at what their fan base had become.

I was never a real big fan of MCD, and for them to compare themselves to the Stooges is a joke. I would be annoyed by Spencer Moody assuming that I was a homophobe for checking out his overrated set, but I didn't go this year, so maybe there were a bunch of lame homophobic types. It's a summer outdoor festival so you are going to get some young stupid moron types, but I'm going to guess that considering the lineup, and how much it costs, most of the crowd would be left leaning and gay friendly.

Also, I know a lot gay "jocks", but I guess that they don't exist in his mind. Spencer Moody sounds like he is a 14 year old high school freshman, or just drunk.

First off I loathe the the frat/jock type concert goer......with that said WHAT THE FUCK DID HE EXPECT! You're a playing at a summer festival at the Gorge with NIN headlining the night. If he couldn't see that one coming(which I doubt), he's an idiot. Nevertheless they agreed to play despite the circumstances.......so cash your check and save tough guy talk.

I'm really beginning to think this band is in it for the money....... how else do you explain a band "reuniting" three times without any new material to preform? Why couldn't you have let an amazing thing "R.I.P." as you so eloquently titled your last/live album.

it's pieces like this that remind me of how non-valuable seattle music criticism is. you can't be objective when you're in bed with the musicians. i attended the pop conference at the EMP a few years ago and robert christgau laid it out regarding this problem with seattle. you can't be friends with the musicians and write about them objectively. therefore your writing isn't anything other than pandering. remember lester bangs? no, i guess you wouldn't. and kurt cobain had a similar tantrum against the frat boys who became nirvana fans. this is nothing new, nor interesting. MCD are walking away with the money (and they booked the huge festival gig) - so any peformance of "protest" against whom they end up playing to is empty and meaningless.

I was at the show on Sunday. The band was very tight and basically saved the set from the out of tune singer. He was falling over drunk and spouting things that made no sense. The crowd mostly looked they were in their 20s so I don't which jocks he thought he saw there. Eventually the band just starting segueing in a hurry from song to song to stop the singer from talking. All in all, it was GREAT entertainment but Spencer Moody was an embarassment and couldn't live in Iggy Pop's jockstrap.

Paigeparsons- do you know how many intrusive photographers I have had invade my private space? As a female performer, I don't have too much respect for the media these days. Don't think you deserved it, but don't feel too bad for you either. If you were that upset, I don't think you'd keep posting your photos up everywhere , ideally trying to receive press, and ultimately money for what you do. It is the band's image you are trying to make a living off of, and classic media style, you and your photos are getting all the attention a photographer could ever ask for. Stupid publicity stunt. Were you minding your own business checking out people at the grocery store? Nope- in the front row of a 20, 000 person punk show, trying to make a living from their images.

As a gay person who has to listen to the nasty, hateful bigotry of the christian right day in and day out (even if I try to ignore it, it just keeps popping up), it's quite satisfying for me to hear some one treat straight people the way many striaght people treat gay people. That said, I feel kind of mean and small for liking it...oh man but it still gives me a little thrill.
Hmm, I think I'll toddle over the the Anne Bonney today and give Mr. Moody some more of my hard earned cash.

At least he provided some entertainment. Sasquatch sounded HORRIBLY boring this year. Karen O tried to look like Bjork, NIN played to jocks and Animal Collective sucked. No surprises there.

Even if Moody is straight, it was still awesome what he did. Especially after Prop 8 has been upheld. I am not saying everyone at that fest was a conservative jock-type, but you know there was a high population of them just by looking at the lineup of that show.

Haha yeah, that look was priceless, lucky dog.

Spencer Moody is what he sings. The Stranger was calling MCD out for being high school dorks that just sang tough a few months ago. fuck that (not in the dj doug pound sense), maybe in '99. I felt more uncomfortable than I had in a long time (since high school probably) when he was telling us to turn around, for better or worse it was probably the most unique and entertaining moment that day, maybe weekend.

Better than the musical-bad-salvia-trip Animal Collective, or falling asleep to Fleet Foxes (although they were kinda funny).

Spencer was what made the trip from Minnesota worth it. On the whole Sasquatch! was an enjoyable but rather bland event. Their set was what I remember about punk shows in the basements and clubs prior to Warped Tour bringing it to the masses. It was dangerous, funny and uncomfortable all at the same time. Without the MCD set I would just be complaining about how horrible Animal Collective was.

P.S. If you want to complain about a band who is just there for the paycheck take a close look at Jane's Addiction. I haven't seen a band simply go through the motions like that since the Police reunion tour.

@39 mollytovcocktail - Paige is a friend of mine and I can tell you straight up that she makes no money from her photos, and doesn't need to. Period. She bought her own ticket, traveled from San Francisco, and drove to East Chukka - because she loves music. You may not have much respect for the media these days, but a lot of those guys and girls down there in the photo pit are enjoying themselves as fans. As a performer, you might think of photographers as fans who appreciate your work and seek to capture your stage presence - assuming that everyone of them has a motive is kind of a bummer.

@60 - I agree that Moody's rant was highly reminiscent of the old-school punk shows that I cut my teeth on in high school. MCD was a pleasant surprise in a lineup that included a lot of bands that I had hoped to see 20 years ago when I was in high school.

My buddy and I made the roadtrip from MT for the show, and he looked at me after the Moody's second wind and said "There are a lot of people here who needed to hear that." I agree with him completely. I'm straight but wasn't offended, cause I knew he wasn't talking to me.

No one has commented on Moody's pre-set ramble about going to Lalapalooza in 1991 to see Jane's... This year's lineup included some golden oldies for the older set, for which I'm thankful. The classics got me to buy the ticket and I experienced a bunch of new bands that I'd have never sought out. Thanks Sasquatch.

#62 Phil-I too have friends who are photographers who do what they do out of love and fandom. Sadly, it was Paige's own words that clearly stated the opposite "...and preferably do it to a fan who chose to be there, rather than to a photographer who’s just doing her job."

It is a constant challenge not to become jaded and mistrusting. And her whole rolling with the act while it was fun and taking her pictures, but then later deciding that she should convince people that she was some sort of a victim, I find appalling. Not only because women already have a hard enough time being believed when they are actually assaulted, but like I said before, it really comes across as an easy way to plug her work. I haven't been able to read a Sasquatch review without her plugging her photoblog somewhere in the comments.

*sigh* But I really do try to focus on the good in people, I swear.

@72 -- Kerri, you're still my hero, ever since meeting you on the bus in Bothell in '84, a bleached, spiky-haired high school kid with the words "Sid Lives" written on a piece of masking tape taped to the front of your black trench coat. Seems you continue recognize the unlikely prophets in our midst, people who despite the ungraceful and unbeautiful ways they have of articulating themselves, somehow manage to get us to take a look at ourselves and maybe reconsider the bullshit and lies we may live.

I went to Sasquatch with a few friends, some 19-yr-old guys from California who are young enough to be my own kids. We were elsewhere during the MCD show. On the drive home, these non-hipster lads expressed their disappointment in the overall experience, as much as they loved most of the music. Apparently, they had watched a lot of footage and read books about rock/punk/indie events of days gone by, and had come with romantic notions of something unpredictable, earth-shaking and dangerous happening at their first rock festival. What they got instead, they said, was a lot of really talented bands playing to hoards of "rich suburban kids with their daddies' cars who may as well have been at a church picnic." As non-eloquent as Spencer may have been in his inebriated proclamations (and as much as he's now responsibly owning up to any damage he caused), perhaps, had my friends seen that show they would have at least applauded his willingness to shake things up a bit, to bring rock & roll back into the realm of uncomfortable.

Hope you still wear that piece of tape on your coat, Kerri.

@71, in many ways your negative comments and jabs are more disturbing than Sunday's spectacle. You have made a conscious choice to send the negativity out there, and I just don't understand why. I shoot for free for Ice Cream Man, any one that knows Matt or me or the rest of the crew knows the good work we do and the positive vibe we cultivate.

Spencer took responsibility for assaulting me (those are his words, not mine) and called me to apologize this afternoon. I accepted his apology, and at my request he posted a public apology and made a donation to an animal rescue organization I volunteer with, House Rabbit Society. He also added "if any one gives you a hard time feel free to direct them to me."

#73 - Sid Vicious is not punk rock. He was nothing more than a wannabe never was, ridiculed by even his own bandmates. Much like ... ?

Many years ago I saw Johnny Thunders at the Whiskey in L.A. so strung out that he was playing completely different songs than his backup band. It was something to talk about, but ultimately so sad. Much like ... ?

By the way, anyone who goes to Sasquatch or Bumbershoot or Warped Tour without KNOWING that it is a corporate rock event is missing the entire point. I saw most of the Mainstage acts on Sunday, and MCD were definitely the bottom of the heap musically, albeit amusing in a voyeuristic way. In response to #60, I thought Jane's Addiction put on a much better show than I expected. And in a few weeks, I'll bet that The Germs with the actor-singer replacing their waste-case will be similarly enthralling.

@75-Well, I guess it seems like you were both a little misinterpreted. I am glad to hear that he issued you an apology. Maybe people aren't so fucked up after all!

@#73... "On the drive home, these non-hipster lads expressed their disappointment in the overall experience, as much as they loved most of the music. Apparently, they had watched a lot of footage and read books about rock/punk/indie events of days gone by, and had come with romantic notions of something unpredictable, earth-shaking and dangerous happening at their first rock festival. What they got instead, they said, was a lot of really talented bands playing to hoards of "rich suburban kids with their daddies' cars who may as well have been at a church picnic."

I'm sorry, but this should be a no brainer to anyone going to a concert at the Gorge. And it's your job as someone a little older to scoop them on the real music scene. You want to go to a real punk/indie show where you might see something unpredictable, forget the rock festivals and big clubs and check out Funhouse, The Bit, The Morgue, The Galway, The Viaduct, Josephine or Holy Mountain. Massive corporations and nation-wide booking companies will give you the complete opposite of dangerous.

Mike Watt and Sun Kil Moon were the best performances of the weekend.

#47 - Annoyed Bear. Sasquatch was good. NIN always plays to jocks, as does any other band making a living playing heavy music these days. a) Bands don't pick their fans, and b) What is wrong with jocks? I like people from Scotland.

There were some amazing performances this weekend. If you missed them, too bad. Not every set is going to be a winner. Go see something else if you think it is starting to suck. That's really the only redeeming thing about giant festivals like this anyway - if you don't like what you see, chances are you can walk 500 yards and see something else. You might not like it, but at least it will be different. Ditto on Mike Watt and Sun Kil Moon. They killed it. MCD was awesome, and if you go to the link that this Paige lady posted, you'll see that Spencer apologized to her.

It was awesome that Moody fucked with the crowd. Better that than no crowd interaction whatsoever. Punk rock and hardcore have a tradition of violent and antisocial behavior - bands and fans alike. It's where stage diving, spitting at the band, and fighting/moshing became popular. Once again, if you don't like it, then leave.

Champagne Champagne killed it. Jane"s Addiction killed it. BLK JKS killed it. Erykah Badu killed it. Monotonix killed it, if you were close enough to see it. Stop whining about which bands sucked. You just chose the wrong bands to see.

Any one heard of signing your name? I like it that people will insult people and then not sign there name. Thats like yelling at someone as you pass by in your car. At least what ever was said from stage, was by someone willing to own up to what ever he said/did that day. We all know who he is and where he is. I love him for what he does. MCD, keep doing what you do. Grandy, keep writing what you write.

Putting your self out there is tough as fuck and I respect all that are willing to put there neck on the line.

Cheers
