But What Will Psychedelic Horseshit Have to Say?!

Posted by Eric Grandy on Fri, May 29, 2009 at 10:17 AM

One more from the 'fork, on alleged lo-fi "poseur [expletive]" Wavves' onstage melt-down last night at the Primavera Sound festival:

After five minutes of directionless strumming and arbitrary snare hits, Nathan dodged the evening's first bottle and decided to wind the aimless tune to an abrupt close. Then, rubbing his hands against his face, he declared in annoyed resignation, "All right, hi everybody, we're Wavves," and launched into an off-key version of "Summer Goth."

Okay, sounds like a regular Wavves set so far, right?

But things declined quickly from there, as between songs, Nathan began ineptly mocking the crowd ("Ooooooh, I'm on ecstasy!"), going off at length about his preference for California over Spain, and eventually telling them the festival was "one of the coolest things we've been part of in a while," dripping with sarcasm. Finally, fed up with Nathan's petulant behavior, Ryan ran out from behind his drumkit and poured a full cup of beer over Nathan's head. The act would be met with their most enthusiastic applause of the evening.

Oh, that's good stuff.

I saw Wavves live a couple times at SXSW and was not impressed.

That said, I found this "news" item on Pitchfork to be utterly disgusting. Aside from the total tabloid nature of this piece, let us not forget that Pitchfork's championing of Wavves has, realistically, a great deal to do with their success, including playing Primavera. The joy with which Pitchfork seemed ready to start tearing down a young band that they helped prop up really repulsed me. Independent music is not supposed to embrace the culture of disposability, but what is, for better or worse, the most influential independent music website on the internet starts behaving like it's edited by Perez Hilton, I fear we are letting that happen.

Dudes fucking up on stage and throwing a tantrum is a funny anecdote to share with your friends after a show. It is not a news item.

@4 - Building someone up just to tear them down is standard operating procedure for Pitchfork. It even has it's own shorthand: "The Travistan."

"The Travistan."

Wow.

(Also, #4 makes a good point; even if this is a news item, the tone seems weirdly, needlessly pissy. Funny too, irt building up/tearing down, that he was playing the Pitchfork-sponsored stage at that festival.)

@4--what century are you living in? The current culture of independent music is nothing but disposibility. It is one overhyped mess after another, with the cycle of 'next-big-thing' never resting or abating. These bands NEVER live up to the hype, but it's become a moot point, because something else comes along and sweeps them out of the spotlight. I think it would be a fun post to list the "What ever happened to...?" of indie bands over the past 10 years.

@7--I support that idea. At the end of 2009 or 2010, someone should compile the 20 Bands Most Hyped by Pitchfork of the Decade... and their current career status. (And the effect of Pitchfork's reviews of their sophomore albums on these careers... hello CYHSY, for example.)
