I have but one request, lads and lasses: “Drugs” by Talking Heads [the video uses wrong artwork, obviously]. I trust you can rise to the occasion.
Last night at Havana was the third Rain City Mix Tape Club meet-up. The theme was Summer Jamz, the music was DJ'd by Neil Ofsteel and Jonah Bergman (of Schoolyard Heroes), and there were even more new people, which means lots more mixes. And now, three months into it, people are starting to get more and more creative with their contributions. One mix came with a toy bubble gun, and another was, well, another looked like this:
Local freelance designer Liz Andrade took the heads of RCMTC regulars and photoshopped them onto the Wet Hot American Summer artwork. Hilarious! And not only is the cover rad, but the mix is good too (everything from Mudhoney to the Temptations to Roy). I fall in love with RCMTC a little more each month.
Next month's meet-up will be June 28th (it's the last Sunday of every month, and always at Havana). The theme is "Dude Party." I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I got dibs on Joan Jett's "Doing Alright With the Boys."
Security staff at R Place called police last month after a member of a violent motorcycle gang paid the Capitol Hill club a visit.
According to a police report, a security staff member called Seattle police on May 27th to report that two weeks earlier, on May 15th, a man tried to enter the club wearing a motorcycle jacket adorned with patches from the Gypsy Jokers, a motorcycle gang based out of Washington and Oregon.
The security staffer, the report says, tried to talk the man out of entering the club, and pointed out that R Place is a gay bar. The man said he was just meeting friends and was allowed inside the club.
Security kept a close eye on the man, but he left without causing any problems. It's unclear why security waited two weeks to call police—club management was not aware of the incident—but the police report says staff promised to contact SPD if they spotted any more motorcycle gang members in the club.
Seattle police have been meeting with club and bar owners around the city in the last few months to provide tips on identifying gangs because of a rise in gang violence around the city.
Seattle techno producer Dave Pezzner is red hot right now, especially after his ballyhooed performance at Detroit’s Movement festival over Memorial Day weekend. Now you can garner some of Pezzner’s shine by entering a contest to remix his track “Valldemossa” on UK label Freerange. Hear the original version here. Check out the prizes here and read about the rules here. The deadline is July 31. Good luck, contestants.

On April 28, 2009 Hip Hop legends De La Soul, in collaboration with Nike, released Are You In? : Nike + Original Run.How cool? It's as cool as a cold corpse. I did not know that De La Soul was really, really dead. The concept of the series is ingenious and helpful for those of us that spend time in gyms and/or running. Artists that you know and love create new music specifically with exercise and fitness in mind. Each album last approximately 45 minutes; the typical length of a workout/run. The music is meant to be listened to while exercising. Each album has a natural warm up track(s) that crescendos into heavy beats and momentum inspiring melodies as your routine becomes more intense! How cool is that?
Jesus it's so hard to sleep in my house when it's this hot out. I was awake half the night, tossing, turning and sweating. I mean, this is why I don't live in freaking Chicago.
Maybe the East German's in the grand ol' days of the DDR had it right. Just put on a snappy outfit and dance around the plaza after a hard days work of trying to find food in the stores....
Which came first: Insane Clown Posse or Juggalos?
I'm finding conflicting reports. Hopefully someone out there knows the facts.
The Cave Singers are releasing their second full-length, Welcome Joy, August 18th. Perfect. That gives us just enough time to spend the last few weeks of summer with the record, so we can sit on our porches at dusk and watch the sun go down and the fireflies come up.
Wait, this isn't Nashville.
Anyway, Matador just posted an MP3 from the record. It's called "Beach House," and you can hear it here. Warning: It will make you ache for August (and a porch in Tennessee).

Clues, Aqueduct, Mount Eerie
(Neumos) Clues frontman Alden Penner was half of the songwriting team behind the wonderful, cartoonishly morbid indie-pop band the Unicorns (RIP), and while his new band often aims for a bigger, loftier sound, there's still something of that act's antic energy in his songs. Penner is supported by former Arcade Fire drummer Brendan Reed and a handful of other musicians, who provide percussive clatter (sometimes on dual drum kits), orchestral ominosity, and solid rock-and-roll ruckus to back up Penner's ranging voice, which flickers from a near-shout to a whisper to a falsetto. Clues can sometimes get bogged down in looming, slow-moving passages—but when the songs pick up and get poppy, it's like that old magical animal has been reborn. Mount Eerie is always a treasure. Peaches, Drums of Death
(Showbox at the Market) Peaches' 2006 record Impeach My Bush (ugh) spawned a couple good singles/remixes ("Boys Wanna Be Her" and the Simian Mobile Disco remix of "Downtown") but didn't make much of an impression. Her album before that, Fatherfucker, was just kind of a mess. Her new album, I Feel Cream, much of which was cowritten by Gonzales, is the best thing she's done since her debut. Peaches successfully tries out airy diva vocals over the title track's muffled rave synths and the twinkling keys and bass arpeggios of the Simian Mobile Disco—coproduced "Lose You." On other SMD coproduction "Billionaire," she's rapping monotone in fine, f-bomb-dropping form, bolstered by a breathless, brutal guest spot from Yo Majesty's Shunda K. "More," one of the album's few strictly solo joints, boasts a nicely buzzing synth line and Peaches whispering sweet-enough dance-floor nothings. The return to form is almost as surprising as that first time you heard "Fuck the Pain Away." ERIC GRANDY
