Decibel Is Happening

Posted by Dave Segal on Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Says director Sean Horton, after some serious doubts about the organization possessing the financial wherewithal to keep the electronic-music/digital-arts fest afloat. And while we were in Detroit for the Movement festival, Horton mentioned that UK dubstep luminary Benga (who failed to make his scheduled Movement appearance) would be playing Decibel. Fantastic news x2. More details as they materialize.

Every year Sean cries wolf and says the festival isn't going to happen or may not happen due to money issues. Every year at the end they say they had the biggest, best festival ever (where are the numbers at the end of the festival on earnings or deficits?). This year there was the begging and scare mongering surrounding the $50 benefit at Triple Door that if not properly attended would mean the end of Decibel. I was at the event (because I love the Decibel Festival) but it certainly didn't look like the sellout that was supposedly required for Decibel to even think about happening this year.

I'm just getting tired of the same shit every year. Tell us how much money you need, break down the areas where you need help and open the process up to the talents and financial support of the community. There are volunteers but it's a closed network. If the festival is now definitely happening, where did the financial security come from to be able to say that? Did you just do some drugs in Montreal and decide you were going ahead with it regardless? How much money did you raise from the Triple Door until now that has pushed you over the edge in deciding to have the festival again? You can't keep saying it's not going to happen without giving concrete numbers for how much money you need to move forward. At this point i'm going to start ignoring your cries for help since they appear to be at least partially overblown.

Where did the money come from to support Decibel between the Triple Door show and your epiphany at Mutek?

Don't get me wrong, I love Decibel and will be buying a pass this year the same as all prior years. I just want some more transparency or at least honesty with regards to the financial obligations required to plan and put on the festival.
