Wow. That is weird.

Why did they do that to David Lovering? Why couldn't he just play the drums?

WTF indeed.

For a brief time before he went all Fox News on us, Dennis Miller had an interesting little late night talk show. These Pixies performances made the sixteen year old danmohr very happy in 1992:

The sixteen year old danmohr was, unfortunately, not smart enough to avoid buying The End of Silence after seeing Rollins Band on a later episode of this same show.

Letterman used to have a rule that the house band had to sit in with every act that came on Late Night. Not at first (like a very early REM performance) but for most of the show's run.

That said, it's fun watching Shaff break free of his straight-laced self and get all punk rock. While chewing gum. And smirking like Larry David after his solo. It's the second weirdest thing I ever saw him do on Late Night. The first? Glad you asked:

(The shot of Dion at the 3:05 mark is great, like he just realized what he had gotten himself into. And at the 5:16 mark, well... you'll see.)
