This afternoon, the biggest Beth Ditto fan ever, Perez Hilton, debuted the band's new video for the single "Heavy Cross." It's shiny.

The Gossip - "Heavy Cross"

The Gossip play the Capitol Hill Block Party Saturday, July 25th.

I love that in the UK, the Gossip are pop.

Because they are.

Wish I liked this song more, and I remain firmly pro-them.

Yeah, nothing from the new album is killing me yet. I've got a bad feeling about it...

Awful band, no redeeming value whatsoever, the singer can only ride the "I'm fat and I love it, pay attention to me!" schtick for so long before everyone else realizes that they're fucking terrible.

There's no denying the woman has a voice.

to the UK's credit, they have had far more subversive music than this crack the top 40.

but really, the only major difference between this and top 40 in the US is the singer's dress size. i think that has more to do with their lack of cross-over appeal in the states than the quality of their music.

5: I know..."O Superman" was like a #2 hit in the UK, right?

the two examples that came to mind were the sex pistols and the orb, but you are correct, mr. schmader: 'o superman' peaked at #2 in 1981. (courtesy of everyhit.com, which i just discovered and will probably waste the next few hours of my life on. the UK music charts are so much more interesting than ours...)

Still using that beat, I see.

Been waiting for a Gossip backlash.

Hmm. I think a huge part of their appeal (which is seriously lacking here) is their gritty totally rocking performances. I remember seeing them once at the place on north side of 5th Ave below the monorail...(what was the name of that place? It closed down a long time ago). Anyway, they put on an amazing performance. To top it all off Beth Ditto ripped off her shirt and did the last few songs in her bra that she said had been purchased the week before at a Wal Mart somewhere in the south. It was an amazing show. This new stuff sounds too polished.

Kinda has a "Edge of Seventeen" Stevie Nicks vibe to it.

@5 Are you talking about the Sit & Spin?

i love this band and will support them no matter what, but man, if you had told me when i first saw them (opening for atom and his package at the arrowspace in olympia circa 2001) that this is where they would end up, i would have slapped you right across the face.
