This Is So Deeply Incriminating of Our Age

Posted by on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 9:44 AM

If Will.i.am is this age's Dylan, this age needs to end.

Lawyers: Is this in any way prosecutable? Malicious comparison? Felony gall? First-degree bullshit?

Will.i.am: Suck.u.do (and I typically like you and your brilliantly stupid songs.)

On one hand I think the commercial is kind of neat. On the other hand I'm deeply insulted that a guy who wrote a song called Let's Get Retarded is our generation's Bob Dylan.

I think the stronger stance to take is "if Jack Black is this age's John Belushi, this age needs to end"

I don't know exactly but I'm pretty sure we can bring a class action law suit against him for being in Wolverine.

Speaking in my capacity as an attorney, Bob Dylan is way overrated and is inferior to Will.I.Am. This is a question of law, not fact. Your complaint is dismissed with prejudice.

Oh and we should blame Bob Dylan for selling his rights away not Will.i.am, he's been a sell out from the start.

Pepsi did a good job of fucking over their entire market. I remember watching this during the Superbowl. I think there's at least one part in this commercial to piss anybody off. My friend shat his paints over the Belushi/Black comparison and I think I got angry over the Gumby/Shrek.

If it helps I am of this generation and I was ranting and raving about the Dylan Will.I.Am comparison.

The best game out this summer stars Jack Black in it.

So, on behalf of my Comrade in Nomenclature, get thee to an ad-free Nunnery!

Sue his ass to oblivion for being partly responsible for "My Humps", which is probably the worst pop hit of the 21st century thus far. That song is to blame for the aggregate depletion of millions, perhaps even billions of IQ points worldwide.

Intentional infliction of emotional distress. But first-degree bullshit is tempting...

I thought the commercial was touching, and I'm generally against commercialism.

i've never understood why people continue to wank over dylan. it made sense in the 60s, but music has evolved so much since then. so he wrote some good lyrics. big deal. so does joni mitchell, and she doesn't sound like a dying cat when she sings them.

Get over it. It's a fucking commercial. Who gives a shit. Personally, I fucking hate dylan.

No. It's not a crime to insult the morals of a time period, so it's not a criminal matter (prosecutable). Further, though intentional infliction of emotional distress would be tempting, you would be more likely to be an amusing footnote in a law casebook than successful. First amendment violations need "state action" to be unconstitutional, and there is almost no recognition of 3rd party (i.e. members of the general public) standing to sue. Pretty much the only way to sue over this is if you were one of the people "insulted" or part of their family and hadn't consented to the comparison. Even then, do you really think PepsiCo would air this spot without extensive research and licensing of those involved?

I dunno, the commercial seems pretty harmless and fun. I don't listen to Dylan or Will.i.am, so I can't say anything there, but the rest seemed pretty innocuous. Belushi = movie fool. Black = movie fool. Gumbi = iconic animation. Shrek = slightly less iconic animation (but hey, they're both green and have a 4-legged talking equine friend).

The worst thing about the commercial is the overwrought line at the end about refreshing the world. It would have been so much nicer if it just ended with the two girls drinking soda, no words at all, just the logo after an audio fade.

Yes, yes, @14. IIED was a joke, and there's no third-party standing, and no extreme or outrageous conduct, etc.... Which brings us back to first-degree bullshit or depraved heart idiocy. I'm pretty sure those are viable claims.

Part of why they have done so well is they have leveraged selling out and done it in a playful and artful way.

Most people down on them are just Anarchist wannabes who can't get the media to cover them, other than failed rags that aren't The Advocate.

People always say it was Puffy but I think those douchey Black Eyed Peas were already scheming on destroying hip-hop when they were the Atban Klann. William gets the gasface.

dude, it's just an ad. he got paid to do it. I'm sure Dylan is aware of it and approved it. get over it. you're taking it too seriously. p.s. Wil.i.am is pretty entertaining. don't blow it for us!
