Ease on Down the Road

If your childhood didn’t revolve around repeated viewings of a pain-faced Diana Ross and a baby-faced Michael Jackson in 1978’s Wizard of Oz reduxThe Wiz, it’s never too late. (My most recent viewing of said classic was at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, where waitresses bring you grilled cheese and beer the whole time you watch. Yours could involve a trip to Scarecrow and QFC.)

Anyway, Seattle has the opportunity to hit up something Wiz-adjacent this evening, and I’m curious to see just how related to the original it will be. The Wiz: A Queer Multicultural Cabaret is the inaugural show produced by Seattle's own (and yes, the press release says this) "Sass, Class, and a Whole Lotta Ass" Miz Ginger Snapz.

Ginger Snapz hopes this show will spark the beginning of a queer revival in Seattle Burlesque. (To which I might say, was there once a heyday of queer burlesque in Seattle? And did I miss it?) To that end, this Wiz will present a diversity of talent across lines of “race, gender, sexual orientation, dis-Ability and body type.”

Heaps of local performers will partake, but my bets are on the Von Foxies (award-winning comedy burlesque troupe known for their Seattle strip that incorporates flannel, Teva Sandals and Space Needle pasties) and Adraboo (of Luxury AK and Hotmess fame, in character as Evillene) to make your night. Consummate drag queen and former Miss Gay Latina, Aleksa Manila, hosts.
