I have to say, so far I'm not totally thrilled with what I've heard from Why?'s forthcoming new album, Eskimo Snow, due out September 22nd on anticon. The album was recorded in the same sessions as last year's awesome Alopecia but set aside for a separate album. The songs sound, deliberately, much more "live" than those on Alopecia; the production is cleaner and less adventurous, leaving bare, typically angsty folk songs as far from a rap or a beat as anything Yoni Wolf and crew have ever done. I'm not less excited about the album solely because of those compositional choices—although I do find the Why? songs that flirt with both rap and folk (and pop and rock and...) to be their most interesting—it's just that its songs, taken together or individual, aren't hitting me with quite the same immediately stunning force as did those on Alopecia (or for that matter Elephant Eyelash).
But! It's not out for a couple months, and my sincere hope is that it proves to be some insidious slow-grower, that by the time I might need to write some proper review of the thing, it will have better burned into my brain. We'll see. For now, though, the first track leaked from the album, "This Blackest Purse," is quietly catchy enough, with its steady drums and piano and Wolf's worried, welled-up chorus. Here it is for your late gray morning moping pleasure:
