La Roux at Chop Suey Tonight

Posted by on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 9:12 AM

Holy shit, guys. It really is, actually, 1982.

I don't know. I mean, I'm all for a synthesizer here or there, and god knows I love a leg warmer. In fact, on the whole, I'm actually really glad that we as a culture are dancing again and having a sense of humor instead of just being all "emotional hardcore" with our guitars and our expensively faux-dirty hair.

But... have we gone too far?

La Roux caught my attention on a recent trip to Berlin, where posters of the group were wheatpasted everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. Lead vocalist Elly Jackson looks and sounds like Annie Lennox by way of Lady Gaga and I am torn. Are these Mercury Prize-nominated Brits to be lauded for their dancefloor-delight melodies, or derided for their derivativeness? Help. HELP!

Okay. Phew. I feel better now.

La Roux plays Chop Suey tonight. Colby B opens. 8pm, $10, all ages.

WTF? There's a confederate flag on the wall at the beginning of that FLock of Seagulls video. At what point in time and space did the FoS's appeal to the deep south?

Yeah, usually I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff..... I would dance to it but otherwise this does nothing for me.

I would, however, like to makeout with the keyboardist and the drummer.

I bet I was the first person ever to discover that a band sounded and appeared to look like another band from the past. I demand credit for discovering this concept of "music derivatives" and being the first to point it out!
