Dead Baby Raceday XIII

Posted by on Fri, Aug 7, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Get thee to the Comet Tavern at 5:00 pm! It's the starting point for The Thirteenth Annual Dead Baby Bike Downhill and Messenger Challenge! The pregistration is closed, but if you think you can hack it, 20 bucks gets you in the race. The actual racing route is still a mystery, but it all ends with the self-proclaimed "Greatest Party Known to Humankind" which fills the streets and sidewalks of Georgetown. There's a rumored 22 bands scheduled to play, Cyclecide's pedal powered amusement park rides, a side show rodeo, foot down, bunny hop, helltrack BMX, the Bicycle Belles, and my always my favorite: BIKE JOUSTING (always fun to watch, even when a passing jousting pole goes right in your eye hole). Tonight, tonight, tonight! RIDE OR DIE MOTHER LOVERS.

Also note, if you can't make it tonight, Dead Baby Bikes are also pimpin' Hardcourt Bicycle Polo, Saturday and Sunday at Magnuson Park, and a bike porn film festival BIKE PORN 3: Cycle Bound, Saturday night, also at Magnuson.

Between you me and the rest of us: Rumor has it that a very special guest is appearing on the mainstage at around 10:00. Not to give too much away, but he's large, in charge, and his one-word name rhymes with "Rad." Just so you know.

Oh man, I wouldn't want to be the one telling the Dead Babys that they are "fucking hipsters."

Looks like I'm changing my plans for tonight.

@ 2 Oh boy no one likes me and I don't have any fun, so I'm gonna yell at people having fun! Stupid people! Having Fun! What a bunch of jerks!

@4 well they kind of are, but they're a fun enough bunch. Hipster isn't a dirty word in every case.

Doesn't being a hipster, these days, require that own at least one item of American Apparel clothing?

@8 No.

@9 I think it has something to do with sunglasses.

Most of the Dead Babys are over-40 over-weight gear heads who support their families by working on machines and fill their weekends with beer and home-made bicycles. Hard working, hard drinking and covered in grease. Call 'em what you will, but "hipster" really doesn't fit.

@11 that sure doesn't sound like the definition of "hipster" to me.

Hipster makes me think of spoiled kids that follow any "underground" trend and pretend like they were "so doing it before it was cool to be doing it" ...

I did this last year and it was a great event. The downhill race was short and fun, and besides the entrance fee $10 got you a commemorative water bottle and unlimited beer refills in said bottle (unlimited until the beer ran out).

You don't really need to race the race, just ride it. There's a small group that actually does race if that's your thing.

Some hipsters but a really diverse crowd. I think anyone who enjoys bikes and booze will like this.

Not attending this year due to a conflict, dammit.

Can somebody tell me where the jousting is going on later in the night?....i know you're not supposed to....but some people unfortunately have to work until 7pm and can't make the beginning of the event. Thanks!

ps. the hipster comment is the most entertaining i've seen in awhile. DIY Bike Punks are like the anti-hipster

@14 but isn't that itself a form of hipsterism? :)
