The Best of Bumbershoot

Posted by Eric Grandy on Tue, Sep 8, 2009 at 12:57 PM

In this order:

1. Modest Mouse

2. Holy Fuck

3. Gang Gang Dance

(Honorable mentions: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who rocked everything right onstage but just didn't sound right in the mix; DJ Spooky's edutaining Watts/Stax mash-up; seeing and hearing Truckasauras' analog electro and vintage video clips on the EMP Sky Church's gajillion-dollar A/V set-up; No Age's optimistically rainbow-hued, scuzz punk rage; Extra Golden's international academic/authentic Benga; Mirah, who could have played more older material, but who sounded sweet as ever, her band's arrangements clean and quiet and simply flattering.)

Rapahel Saadiq was ridiculously good - did no-one on your staff catch him? Everyone was too busy watching Jason Mraz?

Yes, because clearly there is so, so much coverage of Jason Mraz here. Segal and I were both at DJ Spooky.

I respectfully disagree. Franz Ferdinand stole the show from Modest Mouse. The audience was transfixed for FF's entire set. They weren't even playing anything I knew, but they worked the crowd from start to finish. Sure, MM is local and has a ton of great new music, but they lost us early in the set and took half their set to get us back. My Northwest pride is hurting from how much better FF was at live performance.

after seeing FF earlier this year, i had a feeling they weren't a good choice to open for MM simply due to them being a lot more energetic, and that assumption was entirely correct. i found myself bored with MM's set even though i like their material, and ended up leaving early to beat the traffic. in my opinion it's a tie between YYYs and FF for the best performance of the weekend.
