What Was the Best Thing You Saw At Bumbershoot This Weekend?

Posted by Megan Seling on Tue, Sep 8, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Seeing Sarah Silverman fall was a highlight for me.

(And I also loved the Lonely Forest [who filled up the EMP Sky Church nearly twice its allowed capacity and debuted a brand new song that's only about two days old], the Parenthetical Girls [especially since that wasn't really their last show even though they said it was], and the Whore Moans' Black Atom.)

How about you?

1. Michael Franti
This was everything a stadium concert should be. He threw in a lot of surprises and changes of mood, but kept the excitement building.

2. Central Services/Board of Education
This band doubles as both a grown-up and kid's band. The Sunday morning show was for kids, but it was fantastic. They put on a show as tight, and as interesting, as They Might Be Giants.

Not one mention of Raphael Saadiq. Y'all should be ashamed...

Highlights:
* Akimbo wrecking Sky Church. Bonus, the guitarist spit on a photographer by accident (?).
* Raphael Saadiq putting shame in Mayer Hawthorne's not-fully-cooked game.
* Sleepy Eyes of Death showing that they are phenomenal without clouds of dry ice smoke. I would even say that their stage presence is elevated by one's ability to see them.
* The Soulsavers' goth gospel in near darkness. The lowered stage lights was one of the best looks of the festival, IMO.
* David Cross sighting at 3 Inches of Blood.

@2: Seeeeeriously killed it. The Lucy Pearl jam in the middle of the set was phenomenal and his control of the crowd was unmatched during the festival.

@3 I missed both Akimbo and Sleepy Eyes--I'm glad to hear they both did well!

Raphael Saadiq, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, and U.S.E.

Honorable mention to the little kid dancing on stage to "Bat Macumba."

@8:
Black Joe Lewis was no joke. Blazing cover of 'I Don't Mind' by James Brown (who covers that?!) and some heavy shit talking in front of the kids towards the end of the set. Yes!

+1 on Raphael Saadiq. I can think of few bands that could actually pull off "Let The Sun Shine" from Hair. He was fantastic.

Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears and Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women.

Black Joe Lewis. Had never heard of him but he slayed. Great garage punk/real blues. Dude didn't look much older than late 20's and sounded and commanded like a blues veteran.
