Don't you just love it when a friend of a friend is all, "Let's go to that Michael Jackson Sing-A-Long at Central Cinema tonight" and you're like "Okay" with no conception at all of what you're actually getting yourself into and next thing you know you're surrounded by a roomful of people singing along to videos of MJ's greatest hits at the top of their lungs and confetti rains down from the ceiling at that dramatic moment when the window breaks in "Smooth Criminal" and all of a sudden the "Northwest's premier Michael Jackson impersonator" (who may or may not have been wearing whiteface) shows up and the movie theater serves you a pizza and your friends wine and then just when you think, "Okay, wow, this was a pretty decent way to spend a Saturday night" all of a sudden five totally pedestrian (i.e. not-dancer-looking) people come out of the audience walking like zombies and bust into a completely accurate re-enactment of the "Thriller" dance as a grand finale to the night?
I love it when that happens.
Best overheard line of the night was during "Black or White"— which was prefaced with a bunch of news clips about how controversial the video was. Friend turns to a friend (as MJ is breaking windows with racist epithets on them and rubbing his crotch and tearing off his shirt) and says, "I love that fighting racism gets him so sexually aroused."
Amen.
This won't be the last Sing-A-Long at Central Cinema; I believe that the ouevre of Patrick Swayze is next to get the treatment. If this sounds like a good time to you, click here.
