"Well this is really weird to say, but we're called Sunny Day Real Estate. Aaaand, I guess we're back."

Posted by Megan Seling on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 2:02 AM

I just got home from Sunny Day Real Estate's "secret" reunion tour kick-off show at Hell's Kitchen in Tacoma—the show was incredible. The place was packed (though I'm pretty sure everyone who came out got in), and the band sounded phenomenal, playing songs mostly from their first two records (which were just reissued on Sub Pop, BTW).

Here's the setlist:

"Friday"
"Theo B"
"Red Elephant"
Song About an Angel
"Seven"
"Grendel"
"Shadows"
"Iscarabaid"
"5/4"
"Guitars & Video Games"
"J'Nuh"
"Sometimes"

Encore:

"In Circles"
"48"
"Spade & Parade"

Also written on the band's setlist, between "In Circles" and "Sometimes" was this:

"10" (new song)

That's right. They have a new song. Sunny Day Real Estate has a new song. BUT! They didn't end up playing it tonight. They played every song BUT that song. After the show, while mingling with fans outside the club, Dan Hoerner admitted that they chickened out. So "10" could still show up somewhere on this tour... we just won't know when...

Sunny Day plays Vancouver, BC tomorrow and Portland Friday. The Seattle stop isn't until October, so if you're really wanting to see 'em, I promise you, it's worth the three-hour drive in either direction.

I'll post a more thorough review tomorrow. Right now I'm too exhausted and happy to say anything other than OMGTHATWASAWESOMELUVYOUSDRE4EVA!

Damn... I love the first two albums as much as anyone but I love the third album too, and I was afraid they won't play any of those songs on this tour. Looks like, except for "Guitar and Video Games," my fears are confirmed,

It really was incredible.

As my friend noted after the show: "Sunny Day is heavier than most hardcore and metal bands . . ."

My ears are still ringing.
Not sure if it was the band, or Megan's girlish screams of glee.

Oh I didn't want to know it was happening beforehand anyway...

@4 I can't believe how loud they were! Gloriously loud, but still loud. And for the record, I'm pretty certain you and Cab were squealing louder than I was.

@5 I tried to tell you, Thuel.

It was freaking great. Not too crowded, good crowd of folks, great setlist (seriously, whodathunk that we would ever hear "RED ELEPHANT" live?), and the show didn't sell out until later. Glad this happened in Tacoma and not on the Hill somewhere.

They played the new song in Vancouver. Also at the end Dan said "We'll be back." Implying that the reunion is more than just this tour...

I step away from a computer for a day and this is what happens. I've seen Sunny Day about 40 times and can't believe I missed it. Oh well, I'm in Portland right now to see them tonight. Can't fuckin' wait!
