Monotonix at Neumos

Posted by Matt Hickey on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Attention rock bands: This is something you should be doing. Attention people: If you've never been to a Monotonix show then you're missing out on one of the greatest things to happen to live music in awhile.

I'd rather be writing good songs.

Also: Monotonix shows are raves for people who don't like techno. Discuss.

all i ever see of this band is them running around in their underwear. do they ever get around to playing songs? what is the crowd hearing when they're goofing off like this? just curious.

@1 and 2 - You both beat me to it.

I mean I'm glad there are bands that are really going nuts like this. It just seems to me that it doesn't have to be at the expense of good songs.

you know, if i wanted some balding, sweaty guy rubbing his balls all over me i could stay home and roll around on the floor.

@6: I've always maintained that anyone can go nuts on stage because it requires balls, not talent. It does take talent to write a quality jam. Also, bands like Les Savy Fav, The Jesus Lizard, and The Cramps have all taught us that having quality jams and an apeshit live show don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I agree James. The music is meh. They ride on a few good riffs but not much substance otherwise. I think that was the fourth or fifth time I've seen them and it's been the same shtick every time. After the fourth time the "improvised" trash can dumping and throwing kinda looses it's luster. Oh look, he's going to put the trash can on the drummer's head. Again.

Hella fun to photograph though.

Seen it once, don't really need to see it again.

It's kinda like Trail of Dead 10 years ago, minus the kinda great Sonic Youth covers.

Looks like a blurry sweaty spectacle, as usual. I appreciated how Segal actually reviewed their music instead of just their performance, too. (http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/a…)

@9 This was what frustrated me. The first time I saw them live, it was awesome. The second time I saw them live I realized they only really have one bag of tricks. What makes a really crazy live show rad is the sense of spontaneity. Once you lose that, I'm no longer interested--especially if the songs aren't there.

Isn't it pretty much like every band that is kinda gimmicky live? Whoever said Nashville Pussy is spot on. Or GWAR. Or the Dickies. Or that AC/DC tribute band that's all chicks. There are a bunch of bands that are awesome live the first time you see them, but by the third time of seeing the exact same shtick it loses it's appeal. It's kinda too bad, you would think a great live band would learn how to mix it up and do a bunch of new antics for the next tour to keep fans coming back. But if you've never seen them before, it's gonna be a great show.

A triumph of Form over Function? In Seattle? Wait...What? I'm having a hard time processing this.

I love a show that is a response to the specific time and place. I love a band that does not take itself seriously. I love a band that is unpredictable. These dudes are about as spontaneous as the federal tax code.

So all these douchebags were at Nuemo's instead of witnessing the Victory Smokes/Police Teeth/Whore Moans quality jams at the Sunset.

Their loss
