Eddie Vedder on King County Elections

Posted by on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 11:52 AM

At his Monday show at the Key Arena, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder said don't support King County Executive candidate Susan Hutchison, he said do support Dow Constantine, and then he croons some old-timey song:

Bravo for archaic rock prophets with a social conscience.

Eddie, Dow's a fratboy who follows football. What's wrong with you?

@1, Susan Hutchinson is a neo-conservative who won't share what her ideas/plans for holding the office would entail. What's wrong with YOU?

How come musicians tell us who to vote for but you never hear a politician recommend a good band? Oh, right -- because it's not their job.

Unfortunately, a large portion of the population doesn't pay attention to elections, especially local. So sometimes groups or individuals who have the attention of masses should let their politics known, if for no other reason than to let people know that there is something going on and they should check it out.

Eddie Vedder is not just a performer, like it or not his voice makes a lot more waves than 90% of people speaking out, so why not let it be heard on important issues. I would bet huge portions of people had never heard of the two people running, and you know some kids, even if its fleeting, got motivated to look it what he was talking about.

Can you not like football and still be politically minded? Trying to figure out #1's logic.

And bravo to Born Anchors. Seriously, getting people to vote or at least get some curiosity aroused in a sold out venue of that size is pretty awesome, especially when it's from a band who has been around the local scene for almost 20 years. No one bitches about Novaselic's political aspirations or waxings.

@1 - as a cranky old man from back in the day, and a former president of the Washington Music Industry Coalition, I can tell you Dow was a big supporter of Seattle music and nightlife well before he was a politician. He was super helpful to bands and clubs fighting against the wave of censorship legislation that went through the state legislature in the early 90s. Dow earned the support of the community. As have McGinn and Holmes.

I've heard that Vedder's a big sports fan himself.
