Surely Bassy: Mary Anne Hobbs’ Fave Female Dubsteppers

Posted by on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 2:04 PM

In last issue's interview with renowned BBC Radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, I asked her about the dearth of female producers in dubstep and its bass-heavy offshoots. She said if you know where to look, women, to paraphrase Renegade Soundwave, are not only responding to bass, but they’re making music that uses a lot of the stuff, too. Below are the names she dropped on me. Now I’m passing them on to you for your own exploration.

Vaccine
Cooly G
Ikonika
Kito
Subeena
Tokimonsta

Vaccine has some of Hotflush's most underrated singles IMO, I've been playing her tracks heavily for the past year. Kito's 'LFO' is one of the cuts that will appear on the next installment of 'Dubstep Allstars', which is pretty big. There is supposedly a Kito / Vaccine cross remix project in development, which will be excellent.

It's a very good question and good observation, I feel like dubstep / funky / beat has quite a few notable female producers that can stand up to their male counterparts. I don't think it happens to often in many other forms of electronic music.

That Cooly G single with Love Dub / Narst is pretty damn good. Had no idea that was a female producer. In my mind it was the 'dubstep Sade' single and now that opinion makes more sense. Will check out the others on that list.
