Jerkin' Overtime: Clothesz Off Movement's "Better Than You Can"

Posted by on Thu, Oct 1, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Thank you, Michaelangelo Matos (Stranger freelancer/columnist who's leaving for a two-year living arrangement in Brooklyn, NY, starting today, fact fans), for telling me about Clothesz Off Movement, a Long Beach, California rap crew who are part of a recent LA-area phenomenon called Jerkin'.

Jerkin' songs revolve around the libido with admirable single-mindedness (Clothesz Off Movement perform topless, from all indications) and the production's as stripped down as, well, a stripper, and as funky as a thong after an eight-hour shift at the titty bar. Jerkin' artists, who are probably younger than you are, say "Later" to gangsta rap and dress in geeky neon-hued finery and skinny jeans—much more Kanye than 50. They have their own dance moves, too. It's likely that Ice-T and Chuck D do not approve. It's also likely that this new musical rage will have all the staying power of an aging record exec's erection, but, hoo-ee, it'll sure be fun while it lasts (Jerkin', that is, not Mr. Warner Bros' boner).

More information can be gleaned from this piece by Jeff Weiss.

I always liked Michaelangelo Matos' take on things.

Hopefully, he can still contribute.
