Not a good analogy. Not like I care about this debate at all, but Jay Z is capitalizing on his "rags to riches" thing. A VERY common topic in Hip Hop, very "American", and very different than people's issues with that other band.

@1:
seriously! exactly!

holy crap this is sweet. and grandys comparison of the "rich whiteboys" and a poor black kid that rose from very humble and dangerous beginnings to become Jay Z.....well that is the most indicative statement of grandys complete ignorance, and dare i say, naivety that only privilege brings.

and yeah-grandys folks have an expensive mortgage and credit debt....like he proclaimed earlier to establish his cred. i doubt he knows what government cheese tastes like.

The entire city of Seattle wishes The Stranger had a competent music editor who was capable of listening to more than two bands and who doesn't engage in pointless arguments that only serve to stroke his own fragile, tiny-dick ego. Grandy has been an embarrassment to Seattle since the moment he started working at The Stranger. He writes about a couple of things ad nauseum. His qualifications for being Editor? The ability to read Pitchfork, drink at bars, and the "experience" of being a failed musician. The bar for Stranger music coverage is extremely, extremely low. You're a hack, Grandy. And don't act like the little bitch that you are when you can't get your tiny brain around the fact that most people who follow The Stranger music coverage feel the same way. It's time to go. Bring back Maerz. Shit even Kathleen Wilson would be a better than this douche.

whats funny is that this fucking lizard faced idiot is so high on cocaine and his ego he thinks this shit is funny. You could hire a mexican from Home Depot who doesn't speak a lick of english and he do a better job being a 'music editor' than Eric.

so.....that last comment, clearly from inside the paper.

if we hate him, and no one at the stranger respects him...
then why the hell is he still there?

I'm not down with all this Grandy hating. Don't understand it. There's nothing wrong with having a debate about the importance of lyrics, and context. I think it's wrongheaded to say the haters of bands like VW don't have a point. Lyrics matter to some people. Sometimes being "playful" in a context of privelege is enough to turn people off to a band, and there's nothing wrong with that. And some people actually just think the band sucks musically as well, believe it or not. But it's also stupid to take it to such a personal level too, on all sides.

@12:

"debate" exists between to equal parties.

what is happening here is one "party" (Grandy) is in a position of power and exposure so large (he's the music editor of The Stranger) that his opinions are essentially looked at, or at least treated as gospel in the indie rock world of seattle. or at least thats the template his job supposedly insinuates to give him.
and the other "party" is, well, US. thats you, I, the readership...and we have very valid points to raise about his postings, and he is angry that he doesnt get to have the last word.

you are right. There's nothing wrong with having a debate.

but this isnt a debate. its a columnist, by himself, responding to criticism from readers. does that clear up anything for you?

Really? I have no serious beef with Grandy, but this is giving him a little too much credit. He's just a music writer. Sometimes people think he's on the money, sometimes people think he's fuckin' up. No different than any other music writer. He's no Robert Christgau, and I think that Eric Grandy himself would probably admit to that.

Granted, some of his pet bands are doing really well in Seattle, but if anyone else was the music editor, their pet bands would be doing really well in Seattle as well.

Another thing to consider: Dan Savage is Eric Grandy's boss.

Dan Savage, by his own admission is a casual music fan at best.

Dan Savage loves controversy.

Dan Savage probably walks across the Stranger office to Grandy's desk to give him a high five whenever people start freaking out about the shit people post on Line Out. We probably just helped him get a raise.
