The Pentagon

The new track by Fresh Espresso....
...Bedroom reinforces P Smoov's centrality in the production and sound of local hiphop. He is as volcanic as Bean One, and has Sabzi's sense of texture. As well as texuality, there is sexuality. The new thing he brings (or returns) to the scene is sex, which has not been here since that famous moment near the opening of the 90s.

At the beginning of the current decade, there were three leading producers in town (Vitamin D, Jake One, and Bean One). By the middle of the decade, Sabzi transformed that triangle into a quartet of top producers. At the end of the decade, in its deepening twilight, the growing figure of P Smoov has remade it into a pentagon.

charles, i agree that P's groups have brought a sexier vibe to local hiphop that wasn't there- if sex is invoked typically it's in the radio-rap emulation-type female-degrading way. it's still explicit but i tend to find this new vibe a lot more sex-positive, and i think it's obvious more ladies are responding to that, which is making the energy @ these shows 1000% times better IMO.

Local hiphop always seemed to either be too serious/lyrical/righteous/PC/whatever to talk about sex @ all, since so much of it's identity is to be contrary to the mainstream.

cats can hate if they want but i for one am tired of increasingly corny arms-crossed hiphop bro-down of the past ohhh- 10 years.

Im not a huge fan of the local rap Ive been exposed too, but Fresh espresso, and Project Lion Heart are something for NW to be proud of. I'm actually a fan of theirs and get excited too hear what they do. which is rare for me considering how critical I am of music....
