Idolator: Enemy of Line Out

Posted by on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 11:42 AM

Seriously, fuck this shit. Idolator, you are dead to Line Out now. Welcome to our "Enemies" list, where' you join such illustrious choads as Lou Perlman, the Insane Clown Posse, and Heroin (the drug, not the band).* RIP.

*Come to think of it, it may be time to further update our enemies list. Feel free to nominate some sites in the comments.

I recall visiting Idolator semi-regularly for a while, but their coverage of American Idol turned me off. This shouldn't come as a giant shock to you; they never seemed entirely grounded in coverage of independent music.

Also, this seems like kind of an overreaction. But maybe I just wasn't attached to Idolator like you were.

You're missing the point. The change today isn't from indie-centric to pop-centric (Idolator always balanced those things to some degree), it's from good writing to crap writing. Even if they were writing about pop music I didn't care about before, the writing was at least intelligent and entertaining. Now, not so much.

I never kept up with the site, but I also noticed this, which is a post of their editor leaving (in style).

I'd nominate Punknews being added to the Friends list, since you guys post quite a few of their stories here. Also, Pitchfork is in both Friends and Enemies (how it got on the Friends list in the first place is a mystery...fuck that site).

Maura Johnston is our Lillian Roxon and more, and may end up our Ellen Willis. I'd love to see a tome reprinting the best of Idolator (R.I.P.).

jesus. out of respect to maura and her years of tireless work, they should have just shut idolator down or at least given it a makeover instead of abruptly defiling the site with piles of wretched posts.

@6: I'm pretty sure that Pitchfork being on both lists might be what some folks call a "making a funny."

Okay, this is going to reveal something about my age and all, but I still remember when I was young, and reading Circus magazine, and one day they turned up with a feature article on ... The New Kids On the Block.

I mean, you know, when you're young that kind of glitzy media gets your attention. What else could compel legions of allegedly heterosexual young boys to paste their walls with pictures of bleach-blonde men sweating their mascara down their faces as they prance around in tights and high-heeled boots?

Say what you want of the Teslas and Motley Crues of the world. Say what you want about the caprices of youth. But I'm telling you, when you get to the store one day and find the freakin' New Kids on the cover of Circus magazine, you start to wonder if maybe the apocalyptics aren't onto something.

I don't know. I clicked on the Idolater link and came up with a cover story on the new Westlife album. Damn it, I only know Westlife from jokes on British television, and I don't want to know anything more about them. I've probably encountered Idolator before, but I've never been a conscious reader of the site. However, their new tone strikes me as the sort of thing I will work to consciously avoid.
