I think The Beatles are partially to blame for the struggle for perfection in rock as they themselves could be clinical at times, like on Sgt Pepper. The problem in the digital age is that people making music are hearing it with their eyes and not their ears when they see the waveforms on the screen. Seeing that the guitar hit and snare hit are off changes your perception of whether or not it sounds good and it's way too easy to just nudge that guitar to match. I'd love someone to make a nice multitrack digital recorder that does not need a software component so you can use it like you would a tape machine.
