Benefit for Slats

Ouch ouch ouch. Wondering why you haven't seen Slats around for awhile? It's 'cause he's been in the hospital. From Nils, of The Greatest Hits:

For those of you who don't know, Slats has been in the hospital for 3 weeks come this Sunday. He fell and broke his hip running for a cab and was sent to the ER. During this time, he almost had his leg amputated, but luckily this didn't happen. He has been sent to ICU a couple times but he has pulled through. Yesterday, he a had a steel rod and plates put into his leg. Everything went okay but his hospital bills are gonna be expensive.

We are putting on a last minute benefit show for him at The Comet Tavern this Sunday, December 6. So far the bands confirmed to play are Neon Nights, The Greatest Hits, Wrecked Chords, and The Badlands. There will be more added...

Hang in there Slats. Looks like the benefit on Sunday starts at 8 pm.

No. I wasn't wondering. Because only the Stranger staff, in their mutant "glorify and idolize a not-aging-but-AGED pseudo hipster" campaign, gives a shit.

Makes me sick that Slats has been turned into a cartoon, as Brain says. He's not, you stupid fucks. He's a real guy, and a good guy who I've known for 25 years. And yeah, there was a time when he was the coolest shit going. I wish him the best, always.

But he IS A CARTOON. That is a fact. A washed-up, never-was, living at home with mama while strolling Pine Street in full on Zombie uniform. Don't be pissed for people calling a spade a fucking spade.

@8 Yes, because somehow disclosing yourself on the internet makes you such a man and/or not a pussy. Get over yourself, punk.

The funhouse was always a shitty venue with shitty booking with shitty drink tickets.

To the Anti-Slats posters:

You are assholes and should keep your pie-holes shut.

Slats did nothing to deserve a broken hip. If Slats needs help I'm glad The Stranger posted this. Slats was/is an icon of sorts in addition to a human being. I hope Slats recovers soon.

One would be challenged to confuse some one that has a lot of character with a cartoon. I am glad to say that in the U.S.A. one does not need to embrace the norm and still lead a life, however it is a road that few can travel comfortably. Slats is a vurry good friend of mine for decades and has a heart. We love him as a son, a brother, neighbor and a friend. He is no stranger to ridicule. Cops, Businessmen, your mom and now you are free to take a swipe at him. But jus' lemme' ass' you a question now : are you comin' from a place of love or fear? You can elect to take a swipe at him but do be warned. "Those who seek to destroy my soul will become a portion for the Fox and inherit the lower regions." -Gen. George S. Patton 1945

First off, Slats isn't a junky and second those "homeless tools" are anything but homeless since last time I checked they were both paying rent on apts, one of which has been there for 4 plus years. I'm sure the person who wrote this is busy speaking philosophy and talking down on people while sipping his Americano at Bauhaus. When at some point he may realize the person he's talking down about is already better off because he has hundreds of people willing to give without asking for a dime.
Slats has coverage because he clearly has many a friend who love and support him.

AND WHO THE FUCK STILL HITS UP HAVANA? idiot.

For the people who don't know Slats and continue to massage their own stupid fucking maladjusted perceptions, this might help explain the person that you're trying to devalue with your hate.

slats is cool and a human and I hope his suffering is minimal and recovery full and speedy but... he doesn't need us to pay his hospital bill. If he's broke and uninsured he'll be fine, there's no way he could ever pay for ICU. Better to have a benefit for all the poor souls who are truly homeless, drug addicted, and/or mentally ill. They really need are help.

Redroots you are mistaken. have you ever watched slats nod out at the bottom of the stairs at Crybaby Studios? when him, his wierd underage averat friends and that girl he called a girlfriend begged and pleaded for change? they could barley pronounce the words. vile underbelly people they were. please stand up from the computer at the library you are at so that someone looking for a job can use the computer. go take advantage of the system at a shelter somewhere and stop bugging me for money.

21. you're a fucking liar.

Fact: Slats payed for the rent at Crybaby, always has. He would never beg or plead for change from someone. I remember the faces all you pretty fucking post punk bands would make walking by him while he sat there and drank his Corona before practices. You are a bunch of uneasy pussy's who got a little too far from Woodenville.

He doen't even read this shit. I've asked him before if he knows that people talk about him online and he doesn't seem to care. So keep writing hateful shit at 4am about a man with a life's worth of experiences while he's suffering in the hospital. You're a hateful piece of shit, obviously.

Slats' guitar playing on the Silly Killers' EP (which was released before most of you idiots were born) alone is more of a contribution to Seattle music than you'll ever make.

Amazing love is being poured out to help someone in need. That's what Jesus would do. It does not matter what has happened in the past. Look for the good in everyone.

Human beings reaching out in sympathy and kindness to someone in trouble is all the original posting was about. Clearly Slats has folks who love him. Those people using this example of love and compassion as a forum for hate are sad, bitter people lacking love in their own lives. Pity them. Get well soon, Slats. Many of us remember you from 1979 forward as a hysterically funny, clever, kind person. You're in our prayers.

I don't know the guy. Seen him around a bunch since I was a teenager. If he got hurt someone/some people should help him out. There is much worse people in the world than this guy, I can assume, that get a lot of help. Guy broke his hip. Fucking ouch man! My thoughts are with ya duder. If you don't like him, then don't help him. But using the internet to campaign against people that want to help some guy seems like annoying thing to do unless you have a very personal vendetta. Take care Slats.

Wishing Slats a speedy recovery from Bham. I've only met him once, played a game of pool with him at Linda's a few months ago. Seemed like a nice guy and has good people backing him up.

And for the record, no I'm not a crust punk or an averat, I sip Americanos at Bauhaus but I also drink PBR at the Comet.

Get well man.

I do not believe anyone deserves to break a hip. (oooowww!!!) and it's great if someone has friends who care about him enough to throw him a benefit.

But you might want to give people a break when they talk about how much of a "cartoon" slats is, or imply anything negative whatsoever.

Slats once took care of one of my drunken friends by paying the tab she couldnt pay, carrying her up the stairs and hailing us a cab. He clearly wasnt doing this to 'get with' either or us, but out of general goodwill. It was great.

However, Ive also seen him (sorry everybody) passed the fuck out in more public places than I'd like to mention, typically with a group of fans and that random blonde chick (also passed out) at some bar or another.
He also threw a beer at a group of my friends without any provocation and we got to drive to the hospital to get one of my friends stitches. *thanks!*

People don't hate on slats because they're "cops, businessmen, or your mom" (yeah, dude down with whitey, up the punx, fucking YYEESSSHH). They probably dislike him based on experiences.

I agree he deserves friendship and love just like anyone else, but it doesnt make him a FUCKING SAINT above judgement.

It seems odd to me that a benefit for someone who is hurt can spark controversy. If you dislike the person, there is nothing compelling one to attend/donate. Seems unreasonable to launch into invective and insult. Likewise it seems unreasonable to attack those who are offering support, and lashing out at them for unrelated issues, such as attacking Brian because the Funhouse's booking aesthetic doesn't fall in line w/ one's personal taste.

disappointing

This is all I've known from growing up people are not always that friendly. You just got to ignore these people and not let them get to you too much. I know its seems to make them want to mess with you more but if you just ignore them eventually they will grow up... At least we can only hope right?

Anyways with that said, I think this is a rather sad thing that has happened to a good guy and friend of all of ours. I've talked to Slats many times before about music and bands. He's definitely a music man and knows his shit! I also think it's rather nice of The Stranger to write this. So thank you! Seattle should reach out to anyone in need if they can. I know we all are not rich but we do what we can right? I myself was proud to play at his benefit and had a fun time rocking out with his friends and ours. Cheers, Leif

People dying of cancer do. A better question would be, who goes on the internet to anonymously slam someone who is dying? You're sad.

My favorite memory of you is when we tried to play apples to apples card game. I went to a party at Coco's apartment on the hill with Robyn, Micha, and my girlfriend Hailey Everyone kinda stopped what they were doing just to play the game it was nice. Robyn was trying to help you play but you just didn't understand or care I think, but you found the card that said "shark" and you said, "this is my card." A week later we were all at the cha cha and you were there of course, It seemed to me that you were like Santa who can be at every mall at the same time, you could be at every party or every show or bar that we went to. Anyway you reached into your pocket and pulled out the card and said something like "hey I still have my shark card, I told you this was my card . . ."I remember you trying to tear down a fence on pike and 11th. you were piss drunk and pissed off and yelling about the changes on the hill. your friend said he tried for an hour to get you to stop so i helped him out. Miss ya Slats.

Wow! It looks like you hate him or love him. But life will still go on. And in 6 months from now, we will all be eating pills or drinking in some shit hole bar or playing in some band that can't leave the hill. That's the truth. Yeah he will be missed by some, not missed by some also. And did he ever really help out the music scene here in Seattle? What did he do in the 80's and in the 90's? Oh that's right just play some lame music that Johnny thunders already did.....
