Re: On Julia Nunes at The Vera Project

Whatever the relative merits of Julia Nunes (my take: the bad Juno kind of "quirky") I have to take mild issue with this:

I think this kind of thing, having a personal interaction with everyone, is the way certain kinds of rock shows are going to go. Nunes is creating diehard fans, one fan at a time, and that's the kind of relationship that supports an artist for decades. It's also a hell of a lot more fun than your standard rock show.

This is of course the way DIY punk (and DIY etc) shows have been going since like forever. Lots of bands sell their own merch, chat with their fans, and don't place themselves on any kind of rock star pedestal (autographs, how gauche). Nunes may be using new media (Youtube) to connect with fans, but the DIY approach is classic. She's basically Black Flag, only with more Beyonce covers.

except the diy/punk crowd was still pretty into excluding others who didnt necessarily share their same ideals. nunes (for better or for worse) probably doesnt give a fuck where you bought your shoes or if you eat meat.

"For bettter or worse" yeah. Part of what made DIY punk (or you could argue rave for that matter) was that it often was part of a political ideology and/or a culture with codes of conduct and aesthetics and values etc etc.

DIY without that is just Stitch'n'Bitch—ie, quirky.

Black Flag with Beyonce covers??? Where's the bitterness, where's the hate, where's the angry anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment attitudes? She strikes me as the perky camp counselor with a knack for for singing feel good pop songs at assembly while all the lemming campers sing along.
