A Request for Dave Segal

Posted by on Fri, Jan 22, 2010 at 2:33 PM

I was jogging this morning (like I very, very occasionally do), and thought: "Dave Segal knows a lot about music. He also knows a lot about running. What would Dave Segal recommend for running music?"

And then: "I wonder if I should ask him for two lists—his favorite running music, and running music for people who like chord progressions and lyrics. Because those lists might not be very similar."

So, Dave Segal—challenge!

I'm not Dave, but...
...I have a (possibly helpful) opinion on the matter. My two favorite records to run to are Antidotes by Foals and Music for Men by Gossip. I also like Manners by Passion Pit. I tend towards up-tempo, crunchy electro stuff for the physical motivation. Les Savy Fav is good for a punk/rock fit. Recently I've listened to Seek Magic by Memory Tapes quite a bit.

Others that I've run a lot to: Crystal Castles s/t, Cross by Justice, and Dan Deacon's Bromst.

Soulwax's Nite Versions is an unfuckwithable running album. I have yet to find anything that tops it. It even has (some) chord changes and lyrics.

I will work on this over the weekend, Brendan. I need to jog my memory a bit.

I've always preferred no music. Just my own breaths. It's calming.

Bromst rewards near-infinite listens.

Running to Irene Cara's "Fame" is really fun and cheesily motivational. Try it, I swear it makes you run faster and harder.

Also, "Girls Night Out" by the Knife and "Destroy Everything You Touch" by Ladytron. Or any of the Dandy Warhols hits, especially "Everyday Should be a Holiday."

Good post. I'm always looking for new music to work out to, since I hate doing it so much.

"Is It Love You're After" by Rose Royce. People will laugh at you when you start doing high-jumps and shooting pretend laser beams, but it's great for your core.

Have you tried these sites? You can make your own mix based on target heart rate.

Also "You're the best around". Best running song.

Black Flag's "First Four Years" and "Damaged" are my go-to soundtracks for the treadmill.

I've actually found that "Midnight Boom" by The Kills provides the perfect indoor treadmill soundtrack...it has a nice build-up/wind-down ratio, it keeps you interested enough to take your mind off your running, but not so focused on the music that you lose track of what you're doing, and it's almost exactly 32 minutes long.
