Sole Leaves Anticon

Tim "Sole" Holland—one of the founders of the Anticon collective, is going for delf:

Today, with a heavy heart I end 11+ years of working with anticon. In the early days of the label, anticon was a pet project of mine, a life-long dream. We fulfilled the dream of a collectively run record label and put out many great records and stood as an image of defiance against the music industry. Those memories, I will always have and be proud of. Sadly, those times are gone, and I need to live in the present as I prepare for the future.

Running my own website and taking a more hands on approach with my art has always brought me great satisfaction and it is what I am choosing to return to. There are no ill feelings between myself and members of anticon. I will continue to work with many of the artists and will always love them as brothers and consider them allies. This is a decision to change the way my music will be exploited and adapt to shifting paradigms.

This comes just a week after El-P's announcement that Def Jux would be seeing a major re-envisioning—which just makes me think back to El deep-sixing the low opinion I already had of Sole's music (no, I never got over this album title) back when the two had their little squabble:

Sole - Dear Elpee

El-P - Linda Tripp

Ouch. Still the nerd rap "No Vaseline," and sadly, rap jerks like me will never forget. Anyway, that said- good luck to Sole on his dolo endeavors. The words of Kansas City indie-hop label Black Clover Records on twitter today, however, resonate:

A DIY surge going on in this indie rap game recently. Bout time, the 90's boom ended .... in the 90's. Welcome, we saved you a seat.

Lar,

Why is Sole so easily dismissed amongst the heads?

did you listen to that song? rap fans typically prefer somebody who can rap. voice = shit, cadence = garbage, and he thought he was really cool using the word "malapropism". i will never forgive.

Yes. I have heard both of those songs and I'll agree, they both stink. It was a retarded fake feud to bolster both of their profiles.

It just seems odd that El-P (who can't rap) is given a pass, while Sole (who can) is not.

I love that Black Clover quote.

I myself have always appreciated non-advanced hip hop.

I'm seeing a trend where people who're pretty much rip off artists and arrogant pricks suddenly have to do everything on their own because no one else will fuck with them. I mean ,that's pretty much everyone name checked in this thread. At least I think that's what happened to me.

El-p can rap, his fundamentals are clearly audible since Funcrusher Plus- he's just got a different style (and not simply a wack one). He also came up thru the NYC underground and paid dues etc. so he is respected.

thank you estey!!

Fair enough and I'll agree that the mean streets of NYC underground are a bit more appealing than the soft-serve sidewalks of Portland, Maine.

Aside from personal preferences you are saying that aesthetics matter.

That doesn't bode well for other back-pack rappers like Doseone then does it?

He's from Idaho.

Jeff are you going to add one single accurate fact to any of this?

Dose is from Ohio. He's hardly the standard definition of a back pack rapper. El-P can rap his ass off. The Sole v El-P feud was not staged.

FACT: Both Sole and El-P are rappers.

Satisfied?

Oh and somebody better update Adam Drucker's wiki page.

"Doseone is the stage name of Adam Drucker (born April 21, 1977), an emcee, artist, and poet from Idaho."

Allow me to quote Dose himself, from the self-titled Them LP: "So here we are in Idaho--Where I was born."

Thanks for playing Shaq.

Turns out I don't know where Dose One is from. Well now I do but I didn't and I thought I did.

You win this time, Jeff. Savor it. Drink deep the victory.

IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN!!! EVARRR!!!1!!
