Hardly Art & GGNZLA Labels Enter Lucrative Tape-Selling Venture

Posted by on Wed, Mar 3, 2010 at 2:09 PM

Hardly Art Records and GGNZLA have entered an agreement whereby the former, a subsidiary of the mighty Sub Pop, allows the latter to release cassette versions of some of its albums.

Please read Hardly Art's press release, which is artful, not hardly.

Have you heard about this whole “DIY” thing that people do? I was reading about it the other day in a local alternative weekly newspaper and it sounds as if there might be some money in it! Accordingly, I got in touch with local DIY label GGNZLA to get the lowdown on making money off of “creating culture instead of exploiting it”. GGNZLA impresario T.V. Coahran explained that cassette tapes are currently where it’s at, and proposed that we work together.

So, with no further ado — Hardly Art is proud to announce today that GGNZLA will be releasing some Hardly Art releases on cassette. First up, a two-sided cassette featuring both of the Dutchess & the Duke’s full-lengths (2008’s She’s the Dutchess, He’s the Duke and 2009’s Sunset / Sunrise) and the (just released this week) debut full-length from Brooklyn’s Golden Triangle, Double Jointer. GGNZLA also plans to release the upcoming Unnatural Helpers full-length, Cracked Love & Other Drugs, on cassette (Hardly Art will be releasing the decidedly less DIY vinyl, CD, and digital formats of that record on April 27th). All cassette releases are limited to 200 copies.

The Golden Triangle and Dutchess & the Duke cassettes are now available via the GGNZLA website, and the Dutchess & the Duke will be selling cassettes at their show this Saturday at the Showbox.

@4-5

you're absolutely right... we need to hit the reset button on the past two and a half decades and just go back to formats people enjoyed buying things on. I mean, mp3s are convenient and it's awesome to be able to fit 5,000 albums on your iPod, but CDs haven't done anything besides give us crates of broken jewel cases. that was your point, yeah?
