The air already started to crackle as GZA sauntered in with Heavy Mentalist Killah Priest last night at Beauty Bar (one of the GZA's sharpest darts: cool-guying). Then I realize his Coffee & Cigarettes co-d Bill "Master Of Reality" Murray, is posted up not two people away. Bill leaned over to the Genius and said something, which i can only imagine was something like "watch this, LOL".
The Murray's well documented pop-up party movement is powerful dope; instantly everybody's burning a hole into their phone's keypad, pretending not to stare as he proceeds to cooly kick it to a random young tender. And like everybody else in there, I was too shook to approach one of my heroes, but I did notice Woody Harrellson standing outside the bar's patio in a Kangol, splitting a Backwoods with his fingernails. Murray, now either over it or needing to blow some more minds, started to shake the spot for greener pastures- but Chicago's "hipster-hop Andrew WK" (c. Matson), Hollywood Holt, took off after him, determined to have the guy from Scrooged watch his show.
And i guess it worked; because when Holt later stopped his intense everybody-jump juke-rap set (with the Ninjasonik dudes onstage providing some extra knuck for your buck), he let everybody know just how lucky he felt to have one of heroes in the crowd, gesturing toward the wicker throne where Murray perched, surrounded by armed Wilhemima models in black S1W fatigues. With a wry half grin, Bill proceeded to strap on a compact, lightweight jetpack with the Austin Film Society logo on the back- and arced off into the starry Austin night, his work complete*.
