Sam Mickens and His Ecstatic Showband Challenges Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings to a Soul Deul

Posted by on Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 9:28 AM

Frontman for the Dead Science and now his own Ecstatic Showband (and sometimes writer for the Stranger) Sam Mickens has today issued the following challenge to NYC soul traditionalists Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings:

Dear citizens of America & the Earth,

On this day, April 20th, 2010, I officially issue a challenge, on behalf of myself and my Ecstatic Showband, to Ms. Sharon Jones & her Dap-Kings, to a battle of the bands to determine who is truly the greatest working soul band in Brooklyn. Song for song and musician for musician, I believe this should prove a burning and exhaustive contest.

The issuance of this challenge bears no spirit of disrespect or denigration towards Ms. Jones and her work; in fact my feelings are full of admiration and esteem. It does however bear the assertion that cultural vanguards must be replaced, and that only through an environment of healthy and virile competition can the illest work be produced. We will meet Ms. Jones in the venue of her choosing and with any preconditions she wishes to impose. If Ms. Jones fails to respond to this challenge I will accept the title of Heavyweight Soul Champion of Brooklyn by default.

Thanks and best regards,
Sam Mickens

Now, if this were a Wu Tang trivia competition we were talking about, I'd bet on Mickens without question, but a soul-off? Let's go to the tapes:

Hmmmm. I can't imagine Jones and the Dap Kings deigning to entertain Mickens' (publicity grab/)challenge, which is a shame, and which I guess would make him champion by default. We'll see...

This is like Joaquin Phoenix's rap aspirations: you just don't know at first if it's a goof or some ridiculous delusion. Perhaps Sam has been pumping iron to the beats of "I Thing I Can Beat Mike Tyson"? I would bet Sam has a better chance of beating Mike Tyson than Sharon Jones. In the words of Zac Pennington (concerning this very challenge) "Good luck, white boy"
