Bo Hansson, 1943-2010

Received the sad word yesterday that Swedish prog-rock icon Bo Hansson passed away April 24, age 67. Hansson was best known for his 1970 LP Sagan om Ringen (released in the UK in 1972 as Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings—yes, that Lord of the Rings, Tolkien breath) and for jamming with Jimi Hendrix and having his song "Tax Free" (co-written by Janne Karlsson) covered by the legendary guitarist.

Hansson's somber, beautifully haunting, baroquely gothic tracks have been sampled by more than a few hiphop producers, as well—a fact that brought the keyboardist much joy. I recommend Hansson's first three LPs—Lord of the Rings, Magician's Hat (1974), and Attic Thoughts (1975)—in that order of importance.
