This morning, I took a break from reading "You might be a cat lover if..." jokes to check up on what transcendental instrumentalist Adam Forkner/White Rainbow's been up to in the time since he played my unofficial birthday show at Cairo Gallery a couple weeks ago (he'll be back in town on May 16th, for a Chop Suey gig with Fuck Buttons. Can't wait!).

To my absolute delight, I came across these tweets from yesterday evening.

"if you like fucked up party dub music PRE-ORDER the WE LIKE CATS debut LP now"

followed by:

"we like cats is me + eva inca ore + honey valet the miracles club making psychedelic reggae dance hall dub jams about cats"

Sold. Inca Ore's been a sonic crush of mine for a hot minute, and I adore Honey Owens (of above cited acts Valet and The Miracles Club, as well as Nudge and Jackie-O Motherfucker) with comparable enthusiasm. White Rainbow is basically Polaris in my universe—the brightest star in a dark and limitless expanse of musical inspiration. That this is a dubby, sun-drenched jam project in the vein of botanically stimulated psychopomp Sun Araw is icing on the cake, but the cou de grĂ¢ce for me is their unashamed choice of idée fixe. This is a band called We Like Cats, with cuddly wuddly housecats as their cardinal muse. Sign me up!

It's been awhile since we got any new material from World or Dark Yoga (collaborative efforts between Forkner and Owens), and I'll be eager to hear what new sounds they can wrangle out of the convergence of their styles. Eva "Inca Ore" Saelens' contributions will be interesting to auscultate, too; the songs on her Silver Sea Surfer School are right in line with the Forknerian mentality, juxtaposing heady ambient experimentalism with tongue-in-cheek song titles.

To be fair, I might be a little late to the game on this one. By late yesterday We Like Cats had already been blogged about, and a mention had been snuck into Forkner's Wikipedia entry (aka the dopest resume ever). But despite my tardiness, I know where to direct you for a sneak preview of the We Like Cats 12" (click here), and I can share this link for a pre-order of the record.

The aforementioned preview track, "Money Dubby Money," is pretty promising, and includes some of the gut-busting dub sirens Forkner was mirthfully dropping into his Cairo set. It's a little reminiscent of the bassy coda to Inca Ore's "Ruff Ridin'" and likewise recalls some of White Rainbow disciple Stag Hare's dubbier moments, but overall, the song serves as a nice ragged-edged synthesis of styles.
